| Aaron's Beard
I've restarted this journal as a sort of repository for my hymns. My old website (Aaron's Beard) is now gone because I couldn't afford the hosting fees anymore, so I've decided to use the title here.
If you're not familiar with my music, what follows will be a strange combination of original hymns and old hymns with new music. Most of the songs I write could be classified as folk music, though a few venture into country and bluegrass territory. I hope, eventually, to add new songs, but for now, I hope you'll enjoy these re-posted songs. Note: All these songs are the property of me, Aaron Adams, and all are Copyright 2002-2008 Aaron Adams. You may freely download, listen to, copy, and distribute these songs, but please make sure and give credit to me for them. They are not intended for commercial purposes and may not be bought, sold, or put to anything but private use without express written consent from Aaron Adams. You are welcome to perform these songs yourself, but please let me know if you plan to do so.
Blessings,

| The songs below were uploaded in roughly the same order they originally appeared in my old journal. As such, the further down the list you get, the newer the music. Some of these songs date back to as early as 1995, but all the recordings were done from 2002-2007. You'll notice that the earlier songs cover a wider range of genres than the later songs. Towards the end of the list, you'll notice a decidedly narrower focus.
The first five songs: Psalm 23. The text doesn't follow any particular translation all the way through, because I originally sang this entirely as improvisation, so the text was simply how Psalm 23 went in my memory. Psalm 117 from the NIV. This brief little song was written when I was directing a summer youth camp session with a friend in 2002. Ecclesiastes. | Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming, a Christmas hymn. All Creatures of Our God and King, arranged by Aaron Adams Holy, Holy, Holy, arranged by Aaron Adams Creator of the Earth and Skies
Lyrics: David W. Hughes
Music: Aaron Adams
Creator of the earth and skies
To whom the words of life belong
Grant us your truth to make us wise
Grant us your power to make us strong
We have not known you: to the skies
Our monuments of follies soar
And all our self-wrought miseries
Have made us trust ourselves the more
We have not loved you: far and wide
The wreckage of our hatred spreads,
And evils wrought by human pride
Recoil on unrepentant heads.
For this, our foolish confidence,
Our pride of knowledge and our sin,
We come to you in penitence;
In us the work of grace begin.
Teach us to know and love you, Lord,
And humbly follow in your way.
Speak to our souls the quickening word,
And turn our darkness into day. Father Resplendant, lyrics by Jeffrey Shoup

| EDIT: Somehow, these attachments disappeared, so if you've tried to download them and the download failed, try again now. Hymn of a Hostage in Peace, lyrics by Jeffrey Shoup Go to Dark Gethsemane, a Holy Week hymn.
Words: James Montgomery, 1820
Music: Petra (Redhead), Nicht so traurig, The Good Shepherd, Gethsemane
Go to dark Gethsemane,
ye that feel the tempter's power;
your Redeemer's conflict see,
watch with him one bitter hour;
turn not from his griefs away,
learn of Jesus Christ to pray.
Follow to the judgment hall;
view the Lord of life arraigned;
O the wormwood and gall!
O the pangs his souls sustained!
Shun not suffering, shame, or loss;
learn of him to bear the cross.
Calvary's mournful mountain climb;
there, adoring at his feet,
mark the miracle of time,
God's own sacrifice complete;
"It is finished!" hear him cry;
learn of Jesus Christ to die. Oh! The Wondrous, Risen King, an Easter hymn by Aaron Adams
Oh! The wondrous risen King
Who, for us, bore such suffering
Has conquered death, and to us brought
New life, eternal life blood bought
His torture was for us a blessing
Robes of white replace black dressing
For His blood has washed us fully
And in His rising, we live surely
Into His death, we are baptized
Now crucified with Him, we rise
And I live not, but Christ in me
A slave to righteousness, I'll be
And not of our own work have we
Received His gracious sanctity
But He gave faith though I deny;
Faith to a doubter such as I
Alleluia! His Church declares
We praise His Name, we are His heirs!
Despite our former state, we now
Are grafted in as righteous boughs! Jesus Lives
Words: Christian F. Gellert, 1751; translated by Frances E. Cox, 1841.
Jesus lives! Thy terrors now
Can no longer, death, appall us;
Jesus lives! by this we know
Thou, O grave, cannot enthrall us.
Alleluia!
Jesus lives! for us He died;
Then, alone to Jesus living
Pure in heart may we abide,
Glory to our Savior giving.
Alleluia!
Jesus lives! our hearts know well
Naught from us His love shall sever;
Life, nor death, nor powers of hell
Tear us from His keeping ever.
Alleluia!
Jesus lives! to Him the throne
Over all the world is given;
May we go where He is gone,
Rest and reign with Him in heaven.
Alleluia! Psalm 139, from The Psalms of David in Metre
1 O Lord, thou hast me search'd and known.
2 Thou know'st my sitting down,
And rising up; yea, all my thoughts
afar to thee are known.
3 My footsteps, and my lying down,
thou compassest always;
Thou also most entirely art
acquaint with all my ways.
4 For in my tongue, before I speak,
not any word can be,
But altogether, lo, O Lord,
it is well known to thee.
5 Behind, before, thou hast beset,
and laid on me thine hand.
6 Such knowledge is too strange for me,
too high to understand.
7 From thy Sp'rit whither shall I go?
or from thy presence fly?
8 Ascend I heav'n, lo, thou art there;
there, if in hell I lie.
9 Take I the morning wings, and dwell
in utmost parts of sea;
10 Ev'n there, Lord, shall thy hand me lead,
thy right hand hold shall me.
11 If I do say that darkness shall
me cover from thy sight,
Then surely shall the very night
about me be as light.
12 Yea, darkness hideth not from thee,
but night doth shine as day:
To thee the darkness and the light
are both alike alway.
13 For thou possessed hast my reins,
and thou hast cover'd me,
When I within my mother's womb
inclosed was by thee.
14 Thee will I praise; for fearfully
and strangely made I am;
Thy works are marv'llous, and right well
my soul doth know the same.
15 My substance was not hid from thee,
when as in secret I
Was made; and in earth's lowest parts
was wrought most curiously.
16 Thine eyes my substance did behold,
yet being unperfect;
And in the volume of thy book
my members all were writ;
Which after in continuance
were fashion'd ev'ry one,
When as they yet all shapeless were,
and of them there was none.
17 How precious also are thy thoughts,
O gracious God, to me!
And in their sum how passing great
and numberless they be!
18 If I should count them, than the sand
they more in number be:
What time soever I awake,
I ever am with thee.
19 Thou, Lord, wilt sure the wicked slay:
hence from me bloody men.
20 Thy foes against thee loudly speak,
and take thy name in vain.
21 Do not I hate all those, O Lord,
that hatred bear to thee?
With those that up against thee rise
can I but grieved be?
22 With perfect hatred them I hate,
my foes I them do hold.
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart,
try me, my thoughts unfold:
24 And see if any wicked way
there be at all in me;
And in thine everlasting way
to me a leader be.

| Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing, my first recorded version. You Make the Good (original recording)
Words/music by Aaron Adams
Copyright 2004 Aaron Adams
All things in heaven and earth are yours
And none can give to you, that you would owe a debt
And how can man against your justice make a stand
As though your righteousness he's met?
You take old things and make them new
You break the hardened heart and draw the man to you
You don't find good to love in men
You make the good in them instead
The world has surely earned your wrath
But you have lavished love on those who gave no heed
And this is love that when we all despised your Name,
That for Your Church, you chose to bleed
And He that bought with such a price
will not let perish anyone whom he has bought
And those He draws He will confirm until the end
And when they fall, they will be caught
You will your promises uphold
Although I stray, you will forever lead me back
For though my faithfulness is fickle and frail
Your faithfulness will never lack
All praise to Him who made all things
All praise to Him who, before time, planned all our days
All praise to You who, in Your dying gave us life
All praise to God, who reigns always Peace After a Storm
Lyrics: William Cowper
Music: Aaron Adams
When darkness long has veil'd my mind,
And smiling day once more appears,
Then, my Redeemer, then I find
The folly of my doubts and fears.
Straight I upbraid my wandering heart,
And blush that I should ever be
Thus prone to act so base a part,
Or harbour one hard thought of Thee!
Oh! let me then at length be taught
What I am still so slow to learn,
That God is love, and changes not,
Nor knows the shadow of a turn.
Sweet truth, and easy to repeat!
But when my faith is sharply tried,
I find myself a learner yet,
Unskilful, weak, and apt to slide.
But, O my Lord, one look from Thee
Subdues the disobedient will,
Drives doubt and discontent away,
And Thy rebellious worm is still.
Thou art as ready to forgive
As I am ready to repine;
Thou, therefore, all the praise receive;
Be shame and self-abhorrence mine. Hear What the Voice from Heaven Proclaims (original recording)
Lyrics: Isaac Watts (chorus added by Aaron Adams)
Music: Aaron Adams
Hear what the voice from heav'n proclaims,
For all the pious dead;
Sweet is the savor of their names,
And soft their sleeping bed.
They die in Jesus, and are blest;
How kind their slumbers are!
From suff'rings and from sins released,
And freed from every snare.
Far from this world of toil and strife,
They're present with the Lord;
The labors of their mortal life
End in a large reward. To live is Christ, to die is gain
For those who trust the lamb who was slain
And in that rest, released from pain
Sheltered by the Lion of Judah’s mane Lord, We Confess Our Numerous Faults
by Isaac Watts
(new music by me)
Lord, we confess our num'rous faults,
How great our guilt has been!
Foolish and vain were all our thoughts,
And all our lives were sin.
But, O my soul! for ever praise,
For ever love his name,
Who turns thy feet from dangerous ways
Of folly, sin, and shame.
Tis not by works of righteousness
Which our own hands have done;
But we are sav'd by sov'reign grace
Abounding through his Son.
'Tis from the mercy of our God
That all our hopes begin;
Tis by the water and the blood
Our souls are wash'd from sin.
Tis through the purchase of his death
Who hung upon the tree,
The Spirit is sent down to breathe
On such dry bones as we.
Rais'd from the dead we live anew;
And, justified by grace,
We shall appear in glory too,
And see our Father's face.

| He Gives to Men and Women Breath (original recording)
Music and Lyrics: Aaron Adams
He gives to men and women breath
And His, the keys of life and death,
He makes anew, though we betray,
His chosen flock though He we slay
This Lamb of God is shepherd, too.
He, sacrificed to make us new,
Shall yet be pastor to His sheep,
And all He sows He also reaps
In stripes across his back and nails,
He, pierced in hand and foot, travails
To offer blameless now the blamed,
And christen “honored” now the shamed
Through many trials, His Father led
Christ Jesus even till He bled
But by His power, He was consoled
And we, when anguished, now He holds
He frees our wills from bands of sin
And, “slaves of righteousness,” we then
Will name ourselves, with joy, for He
Has named us children, even me.
An alternate version with harmony can be heard here. In Glory Everlasting
by Aaron Adams
In glory everlasting, His Kingdom is around
Though many try to pin it down,
Its spread is unbound
For He is King o’er all that is,
In every realm and land
And to His Church, all that comes to pass
Is turned to blessing by His hand!
The Lord Himself has authored, through faithful men of old
The Scriptures that of Him have told
How He for us was bought and sold.
And in the Word, we apprehend
Of works both great and bold
By others who, in spite of hurt
Did to the faith still hold
And just as they who labored, we labor still today
Our love for others, to display,
And in faithfulness, to pray
For they are lost, as we were once
For all have gone astray
And we shall go forth, in His Name
To be a beacon for the Way.
Hosannas, we would offer, we lay the palm fronds down
Though we’d first welcome you to town
We’d later give a thorny crown
And though the best prove faithless
Your faithfulness abounds
And though we’d nail you to a cross
You’d dress us up in righteous gowns
In praise of God, the Father; in praise of God, the Son
In praise of God, the Spirit, none
Shall bow to any but the One
Whose mercy is unending,
Who ends all that’s begun
Who formed the earth and formed the sun
Who by His death, our lives has won. Would I Expect His Advent
by Aaron Adams
Would I expect His advent thus?
To see the King adorned in flesh?
The earth and all within are His,
Yet He came down to give us heaven.
Would I expect His advent
To have happened nobly?
The King of kings came not in splendor,
Robed in might for all to see.
While wicked men and women
Lived unrepentant lives,
The firstborn righteous child was born
In him, our hope arrives.
Human weakness marked his travels
Born, he nursed at Mary’s breast
In His death, His power was weakness,
And in His death, He bought our rest
From all eternity, He has brought
About His plan His Church to spare
Now, as a child, He did appear
Born to us in stable bare.
Would I expect His advent
To establish peace on earth?
He brings a sword, a winnowing fork,
Dividing chaff and worth
I know His final advent
Comes like a thief in the night.
His weakness gone, our sins destroyed
He returns robed in might!
The LORD, God, reigns in all the earth
His Name, we lift on high!
For His we are, by grace redeemed
He is our sole supply!

| Hymns on the Love of the Lord and the Love of the Lord (pt. 1) The next few songs are part of a project that I call Hymns on the Love of the Lord and the Love of the Lord. The repetition is intentional and is a word-play - you might call it "Hymns on the Lord's Love and Love for the Lord."
Anyway, the project started when I made arrangements with a friend of mine to record a few songs at his studio when I went to visit my mother during her battle with cancer. I had a cold that week, so my voice is poor on a couple of the songs, but the sound quality was light years ahead of anything I ever produced on my computer with Cakewalk and a $10 PC microphone. I picked these particular songs because they are among my favorites of the things I've written, and they're focused around the theme of the amazing redemption our Lord has worked, and our loving response.
One song is included in the project that wasn't recorded at Ethan's studio, but I think it's worth including: He Gives to Men and Women Breath, this time sung by my wife Heather. We actually made that recording as part of a CD we made for loved ones for Christmas 2006, but she sings the song so much better than I could ever hope to do. I hope these songs will bless you and turn your heart toward our Lord in praise and love. You Make the Good (new recording)

Copyright 2007 Aaron Adams There Is a Fountain Filled with Blood
words: William Cowper, 1772
music: Aaron Adams
There is a fountain filled with blood drawn from Emmanuel’s veins;
And sinners plunged beneath that flood lose all their guilty stains.
The dying thief rejoiced to see that fountain in his day;
And there have I, though vile as he, washed all my sins away.
Dear dying Lamb, Thy precious blood shall never lose its power
Till all the ransomed church of God be saved, to sin no more.
E’er since, by faith, I saw the stream Thy flowing wounds supply,
Redeeming love has been my theme, and shall be till I die.
Then in a nobler, sweeter song, I’ll sing Thy power to save,
When this poor lisping, stammering tongue lies silent in the grave.
Lord, I believe Thou hast prepared, unworthy though I be,
For me a blood bought free reward, a golden harp for me!
’Tis strung and tuned for endless years, and formed by power divine,
To sound in God the Father’s ears no other name but Thine. Recorded by Ethan Wood at the Red Room Studio, Kilgore, TX

| Hymns on the Love of the Lord and the Love of the Lord (pt. 2) When He Calls Us
by Aaron Adams
The state of man is universal
We’re all the same, we’re all born sinful
Instead of goodness we seek elevation
We please ourselves in ruination
And when He calls us, He calls us out of night
Calls us out of every kind of selfishness and sin
And when He calls us, He calls us to the Light
Not because we’re good, but because He’s Him
Our deeds are dark, our hearts are wicked
depraved, corrupt, we’ve earned His judgment
But in His mercy, He gave forgiveness
He took our sin, to make us righteous
And when He calls us, we pass from death to life,
We will not enter judgment; His word has set us free
And when He calls us, He does away with strife
He reconciles us to Him, though we were His enemies
He showed His love in His descending.
His grace and love are never-ending.
Though He was righteous, we didn’t want Him.
He gave Himself to men who killed Him.
And when He calls us, He bares His Holy arm,
And saves the ones he chose before the making of the earth
And when He calls us, He heals our every harm
His suffering brings healing, and His death gives us new birth
The Lord is faithful, and He protects us.
He loves His sheep, He died to win us.
And He will finish what He has started
We’re saved by grace, we will not lose it
And when He calls us, our stone hearts are replaced
He gives us hearts that beat for Him, He teaches us to love.
And when He calls us, He showers us with grace,
And promises a place with Him in mansions up above. copyright 2007 Aaron Adams

Music: Aaron Adams
Lyrics: Paraphrased from Psalm 119 by Aaron Adams
HOW blessed are they whose path is right, who in the law of God do stride.
Blessed they are who guard His Word, who seek Him faithfully!
In wickedness, they will not stray; They in His ways abide.
Your mandates You have set for us, to keep them steadfastly.
OH, that my path may be ordained to guard Your precepts all my days!
Then when I look on all Your laws, I shall not need to quake
In all your righteous judgments, I shall give You thanks and praise
With righteous heart, I’ll keep Your Law; Oh me do not forsake!
HOW can a learner purely walk? By guidance from Your Holy Word.
I’ve followed you with all my heart; in Your laws, keep me.
That I may not sin against You, LORD, I’ve stored in my heart Your Word
Blessed are You, Oh LORD! Teach Your servant Your decrees.
I HAVE told of all the laws which from Your mouth to men progress
And joy that riches cannot match comes to me from Your Word
In contemplation, all Your precepts and Your ways I'll bless
And I’ll delight in Your decrees; I’ll not forget Your Word. copyright 2007 Aaron Adams

| For the moment, these are all the songs I have to post. I hope this summer to write some new hymns, but my PC has become extremely loud, so I don't know when I'll be able to record them. I'll let you know! For now, feel free to post comments here.

| From time to time I listen to the two songs we wrote and I'm humbled. Perhaps one day we should try that again - you brought my lyrics to life. |
