| Just bought.... Canon 40D
Canon 580EX II Speedlight
I can't wait for them to get here
I'm also planning on getting another lens or two, but it depends on how my finances pan out. I really have my eye on the 24-70mm f2.8L, but at $1200, I'm not sure if I'll be able to reasonably afford it. Perhaps some others have a possible plan B for me? I got some ideas, but maybe you'll suggest something I didn't think about yet. I'm wanting it to replace the stock lens I got with my XT, the 17-55mm f3.5-5.6. My requirements:
1) Has to be a mid-zoom. I want it to be an "every day" kind of lens that's flexible and is something I can walk around without carrying a bunch of other lenses and still get great shots. I'm thinking around the range of the L lens I'm looking at... 24-70mm, maybe a little wider.
2) Has to have a 2.8 max aperture at least that's consistent throughout the zoom.
3) I'd prefer if it's not EF-S, but this isn't a deal breaker. The reason being I'd like it to be usable in the future if I end up getting a film SLR or a full frame digital like the 5D. |

| Lucky I love using film but I really would like a digital just so I can share some of my pictures online now and then.
Or maybe I'll just invest in a scanner since it's cheaper. |

| I was considering the Sigma 28-70 f/2.8 when I was buying my XTi. It looks like a good lens, but my only experience with it is when I played with it in the store. |

| I just read a review that said that lens gets pretty soft at 2.8 and only gets useable at around 4-5.6. Agree or disagree?
I also have my eye on the Canon 17-55mm f2.8 IS, but it's not that much cheaper than the 24-70mm f2.8L (if you don't consider $200-300 less that much cheaper). I'm considering selling my 75-300mm f4-5.6 and getting a 70-200mm f4L too. So if anyone is interested in buying, it's been barely used. |

On eBay used, they'll usually go for about $90-100. But I seriously have barely used this lens at all. I could probably count the number on my fingers. And I only bought it a year ago. So, how does $120+shipping sound? PM if interested. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...Autofocus.html |

| I originally stated that the lens didn't have to be EF, but could be EF-S. I've changed my mind on that one. If I'm going to be spending a decent amount of money on this lens, I want it to last a lifetime, and EF-S may not last a lifetime if you consider the likelihood of Canon extending the amount of full frame sensors in their DSLRs within the next 5-10 years. So, any lens suggestions from now on have to be compatible with full frame sensors (essentially, anything EF or EF compatible should do). |

Recently bought an XTi with the 18-55mm kit lens and am looking for something to give me some more zoom range for concerts and whatnot. You say yours isn't the USM version...what's the USM mean anyway? I see Wal-Mart actually sells the USM version of that lens, but it's $250 (B&H for $200...odd).

| USM stands for Ultrasonic Motor, the other version has a DC motor, the USM is considered "better", by virtue of working faster and quietly. |

They were taken with a Rebel XT. It's not an awful lens given the price, especially if you need lots of zoom range. I just hardly ever need that large of a zoom. It's not the fastest or sharpest lens, but you won't find another lens at this price with that big of a zoom, at least not that I know of. |
