Just bought....

Canon 40D
Canon 580EX II Speedlight

I can't wait for them to get here

I'm also planning on getting another lens or two, but it depends on how my finances pan out. I really have my eye on the 24-70mm f2.8L, but at $1200, I'm not sure if I'll be able to reasonably afford it. Perhaps some others have a possible plan B for me? I got some ideas, but maybe you'll suggest something I didn't think about yet. I'm wanting it to replace the stock lens I got with my XT, the 17-55mm f3.5-5.6. My requirements:

1) Has to be a mid-zoom. I want it to be an "every day" kind of lens that's flexible and is something I can walk around without carrying a bunch of other lenses and still get great shots. I'm thinking around the range of the L lens I'm looking at... 24-70mm, maybe a little wider.

2) Has to have a 2.8 max aperture at least that's consistent throughout the zoom.

3) I'd prefer if it's not EF-S, but this isn't a deal breaker. The reason being I'd like it to be usable in the future if I end up getting a film SLR or a full frame digital like the 5D.

Lucky I love using film but I really would like a digital just so I can share some of my pictures online now and then.

Or maybe I'll just invest in a scanner since it's cheaper.

I was considering the Sigma 28-70 f/2.8 when I was buying my XTi. It looks like a good lens, but my only experience with it is when I played with it in the store.

I just read a review that said that lens gets pretty soft at 2.8 and only gets useable at around 4-5.6. Agree or disagree?

I also have my eye on the Canon 17-55mm f2.8 IS, but it's not that much cheaper than the 24-70mm f2.8L (if you don't consider $200-300 less that much cheaper). I'm considering selling my 75-300mm f4-5.6 and getting a 70-200mm f4L too. So if anyone is interested in buying, it's been barely used.

Well, they sell for about $150 brand new. It's not the USM or Macro version, but the Autofocus version. On eBay used, they'll usually go for about $90-100. But I seriously have barely used this lens at all. I could probably count the number on my fingers. And I only bought it a year ago. So, how does $120+shipping sound? PM if interested.

I originally stated that the lens didn't have to be EF, but could be EF-S. I've changed my mind on that one. If I'm going to be spending a decent amount of money on this lens, I want it to last a lifetime, and EF-S may not last a lifetime if you consider the likelihood of Canon extending the amount of full frame sensors in their DSLRs within the next 5-10 years. So, any lens suggestions from now on have to be compatible with full frame sensors (essentially, anything EF or EF compatible should do).

Yo Jon...anything on your portfolio site that you shot with that lens? And if so, what camera were you using? Recently bought an XTi with the 18-55mm kit lens and am looking for something to give me some more zoom range for concerts and whatnot. You say yours isn't the USM version...what's the USM mean anyway? I see Wal-Mart actually sells the USM version of that lens, but it's $250 (B&H for $200...odd).

USM stands for Ultrasonic Motor, the other version has a DC motor, the USM is considered "better", by virtue of working faster and quietly.

Yeah, #23 and #24 under the "children" section (the two of the girl with the easter egg basket). They were taken with a Rebel XT. It's not an awful lens given the price, especially if you need lots of zoom range. I just hardly ever need that large of a zoom. It's not the fastest or sharpest lens, but you won't find another lens at this price with that big of a zoom, at least not that I know of.
