Glad to see you got it figured out.

I am glad you got that issue resolved, Art. To satisfy my curiosity, tell me what the checkbox was?

Had nothing to do with shutting down right away, really. It was, as Breadman said, a problem that seems to have occurred on a Windows Update.

Internet Explorer> Tools> Internet Options> Connections> LAN Settings> Use a Proxy Server For Your LAN. I had to uncheck it.

I was just saying, sometimes a simple reboot fixes things. Windows update, unfortunately, makes great and grand assumptions. A frequent call I get from my dialup customers is " my Internet connection quits working". What? After, going through a bunch of the menus, connection related, I finally got out of them that it disconnects only when they're in mail, specifically, Outlook express. Sure enough, went into the settings and windows update placed a check mark in the "disconnect after sending mail" box. That would have been a Windows XP update.

Wouldn't surprise me if Vista just sneers if the box has a dialup

it'll block off programs for no reason
It gets better. download onecare.
It blocked IE, Microsoft update, Windows Live Messenger, Windows Live mail, (all of these being microsoft programs) and I think it almost blocked itself once.

On a completely unrelated note Safari spell checks for you, and "microsoft" isn't in their dictionary

microsoft is not a word. "Microsoft", however, is. Use a proper noun as such.
