I'm new to drumming (and this site) but I have a pulse 5 piece and (my my standards) it's pretty good. Check here. This might not matter to you, but I like the wine red : ]. Anyways, this set comes with cymbals and double braced hardware, and it's only about $500. I like it. The only thing is, it doesn't come with a throne : / but other than that, it's great!
I would recommend you not leave any less then $300-400 left over for cymbals. $200 cymbals will sound like hubcaps and you'll have to spend an additional $300-400 getting new ones in the future.
Well I can't even tell the difference. I've only had one set of cymbals; they came with the set lol.

In a few years, a I guarantee that your standards will change.
However, I'm still a pretty firm believer that even a cheaper set when tuned correctly with good heads will give decent results. But nicer sets are always nicer. And you always want decent hardware, because your set will be falling apart within a couple years otherwise.

Yeah. A well built shell is a well built shell. Cheap shells can sound just fine with good heads and proper tuning...
Unfortunately tweaks can't save trashy cymbals.

After you've been playing for awhile and get used to the sound of the cymbals of your teacher and the sound of the cymbals you hear in songs you will notice the difference. Good quality (or poor quality) cymbals can make or break your set.

In my opinion, I would definitely go with a Pearl set. They're nice and have a great range of prices. If you're not interested in Pearl, you could try CB Drums, the upper end of their drums are pretty good.
