Question Is cheese alright for dogs?

Whenever our dog does something good, we reward him with cheese. I've heard from my brother that cheese is as bad as chocolate for a dog. Is that true?

Question
I have heard cheese is bad for dogs and cats, is this true?

Answer
Cheese is a nutritious ingredient for pets, as it is for people and is used in a variety of pet foods and treats. Cheese provides excellent quality protein, calcium, Vitamin A, and essential fatty acids. B-complex vitamins are contained in some cheeses. Pets also like the taste of cheese and it can be a part of a complete and balanced pet food diet. However, pets should not be fed cheese from table scraps, which could contain too much fat and salt.

've also read that many adult dogs have a problem with lactose. So, it might not be bad for them, but could cause them some comfort or gas issues. I don't know if that is true or not, I've never asked the vet, but we limit how much cheese our dogs get. Our dachshund already has plenty of gas issues.

As a side note, I just learned a few weeks ago that only a handful of grapes could kill your dog...good to know since we have been using grapes as treats for years...

Chocolate, Avocado, grapes/raisins, onion, tomato, potatoes can all be very harmful to your dog.

Dogs are mildly lactose intolerant..meaning in large amounts dairy can cause them some discomfort. Small amounts of cheese should be ok as treats, but not on a regular basis (due to high fat content). Steer clear of processed cheese as well.

True, plus there are very many other things that can be bad for your dog. Cheese (table scraps) has also been know to cause cataracts in dogs, which can make them go blind.

Different human foods have different reactions with dogs. They can also be allergic to certian human foods (as they experience allerigies just like humans may be allergic to certain things). Chocolate for example can poison their system if they are given too much.. IMO, I believe they shouldn't be given it at all.

I have three grown dogs that all eat cheese with no ill effects. They eat all kinds but will not eat the generic brand that we got from Wal-mart once. I can't recall the name brand. They prefer the Kraft singles. I usually give them about 2 slices at a time. My pups are Boxers. My vet said that cheese is ok for them. I also feed them almost anything that I eat. My vet does frown on this. I sometimes give them chocolate. They like Reece's cups (mini's). I'll only give them about 2 every 2 months. They like anything that has been fried including onions.

My father has a dog that ate turkey once and nearly died. The vet told him that 10% of all dogs are allergic to turkey. If your dog is not allergic to turkey then they may eat it with no ill effects.

My dogs won't eat ketchup, pickles, raw onions, or drink soda pop. This, along with the cheapo cheese, are the only things that I've found that they won't eat so far.

And just so you don't worry, Dink and Sadie are very healthy.
