Saxon is a ridiculously difficult and advanced math curriculum in terms of problem sets and knowledge requirements and breadth of skills employed, it's just that it's taught and arranged so well that it makes it seem easy.
Word problems shouldn't be difficult. The problem is more likely that you haven't been properly prepared for algebra yet. Most algebra word problems are simply about solving a system of two equations. It should be easy.
