P90s and Mini Humbuckers.

Aren't P90s and Mini Humbuckers basically the same size and interchangeable?

The answers are no and no. Mini humbuckers are smaller in every dimension.

Oh ok just wondering so if I wanted to drop one in where it was routed for a P90 it wouldn't stay in?

You might be able to rig up a system where it would work. I'm not sure.

I think the mini humbucker + the plastic mounting ring that Gibson used on the Deluxe model Les Pauls is the same outer dimensions as a P90, and interchangeable. I read once that the reason Gibby came up with those in the late 60's/early 70's is that they had a large quantity of shaped bodies from the 50's that were routed for P90's. Correct me if I'm wrong.

That would make sense. I don't know what the size of the mini-humbucker + ring is. I just know that the pickups themselves aren't a direct swap.

Right I read that somewhere about the LP Deluxe's I think. Reason for this question is. I'm actually realyl enjoying the shape and neck of the SX and I was thinking about seeing if I could get a black one with a stoptail and slap some mini humbuckers in it (after some pedals). So if I used the LP Mounting ring + MIni humbucker it would work?

Assuming SX's bodies are Gibson spec, which they probably aren't.

This negatively affected my tone in ways that I just can't describe.
Then, on a whim, a few years ago I wandered into a Bath and Body Works store at a local mall and picked up some of their gentle foaming anti-bacterial hand cleansers.
The difference in my guitar's sound is so wickedly improved that I no longer feel the need to buy a new amp or pedals or even strings...EVER!
So, it's my belief that tone is in the soap.
Thank you and goodnight.

But pretty much all humbucker routes are the same (Arent they?) So wouldn't P90s be the same?

It really depends on what the guitar is routed for. You'd have to take the pickguard off to see.

I thought you were returning your SX.

Dude, if it sounds amazing, why do you want to change the pickups???

I thought I had GAS...I'm nominating you for the official poster boy.

I know some will disagree, but mini humbuckers are not going to sound all that much different than what you have now. Probably not so much different that just a bit of an eq tweak on the amp would do about the same thing. P90 replacement pickups are available in in different flavors - stacked humbuckers, etc. I think DiMarzio has a side by side humbucker in P90 size.

Well this thread is more of a Could I do this thread than a Im gonna do this thread. I wasnt planning on changing my SXSJM I have now. I was thinking a black SXJM with Block inlays and Mini humbuckers would be the bomb and I was going to see how much it would cost. Since I love the neck so much on my SXJM. Major Tom thanks for the quote it is going into my sig.
