I'm thinking of taking up the banjo. Could anyone give me information on what brand is good to start off with...good techniques to start practicing...and other learning resources?

Well, I suppose you could look at the other banjo threads in this forum, like "how does a banjo work" which provides some banjo links, I believe. Or just look at any of the other banjo threads. No personal advice from myself, sorry.
I've been TRYING to learn banjo. From what I've read a Deering Goodtime banjo is the best to start with. The Murphy Method DVD's really helped me in learning.
Great videos for all types of instruments, Guitar, Mandolin, Fiddle, and Banjo

Maybe slightly off topic, but I thought Travis Tritt missed a golden opportunity when he did "Take it Easy" and did not include a fast ripping banjo interlude... THAT would have been awesome.

I would also recommend checking out The How And Tao Of Old-Time Banjo and videos on YouTube by user Dobro33H. These are great resources for frailing or clawhammer banjo.
