Cat does not like dog

Ok, my mom's fiance (Tim) has a dog and we have a cat. Once in a while the dog will come over with Tim and the cat runs and hides in the basement, puffs up and doesn't come out till the dog leaves. Usually that's what happens. But the last few times the dog has been here he's been coming upstairs and hiding around up here. But he hisses a lot and stuff. The dog is deaf and the cat doesn't realize he can't hear him. But the dog will see the cat and bark at him and the cat runs again. Does anyone know how to get these 2 to like eachother or atleast get the cat to stop puffing up and hissing so much? In about 2 months Tim will be living here all the time. Which means the dog will be here all the time too.

Put them both in a crate together and let them work out their differences.

Cats and dogs both take time to come to terms with others, humans included. My guess is that the dog is used to being dominant and so is the cat. The result is that the dog doesn't understand how forward the cat is in challenging its dominance, and the cat doesn't understand how the dog is going about challenging its dominance.
The solution? Basically what Al said. Except ixnay on the atecray.

What Jason said.
You also have to remember that they're different species....so the way they show dominance/fear/aggression is completely different. They don't exactly understand each other.
I'll take quite awhile, but eventually it'll work out....not necesssarily with them "liking" each other, but they'll learn how to deal with each other. You just have to give them time to do it. The only thing you can really do is make sure they are both safe in the meantime. Don't force it. And yeah....no crate. Heh.
