Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri

Anyone played this? It's fairly old, but I've played it for years and I always cycle back to it....it's my personal favorite turn-based strategy game.

Classic. I think everybody should play this at least once.

Well, you MIGHT like this then, but it's unlikely....what was it that you hated about Civilization?

to tell you the truth i cant really remember. it was just boring. RTS gaming is fun, but i didnt like it for some reason. I like the C&C games. I have all of em except generals and generals: zero hour or w/e its called. i got tiberium wars a little while back and its really fun. oh yeah. i dont have tiberium dawn. i dont even know where to find it....

I think you meant turn-based strategy is fun, but you didn't like it?
I'll admit, turn-based games don't have the frantic pace of games like C&C, but I like them better because of the in-depth strategy you can use....the good turn-based games are like chess on a much grander scale.

yeah. idk i ahvent tried civilizations in a while, but it didnt really appeal to me. i mean, there was a time when i played Medievia on telnet and then MUDmaster, but i quit for like a month and forgot all the commands. im more into communications than games now, but lately i've been playing FoF. I just dont really like "chess" right now.

If you do decide to try turn-based games again, I would highly recommend Alpha Centari....you can leave almost everything up to the computer at the beginning while you're learning the game, but once you get it down you can completely control EVERYTHING....plus if you get the expansion, you double the playable factions (civilizations).

Hmm....there are some similarities, but they aren't really that comparable....for example, in AC you customize and build your units to your specifications, and you choose which technology you research....therefore if you want to have a powerful air force, you can research to get needlejets, and then build whatever type of aircraft you need (defense, offense, scouting etc)....also, rather than building specific military buildings, or a university for research, each base in AC can do anything....and you can fully customize what each base is doing by changing resource harvesting, base facilities, etc.....another huge difference is faction diplomacy. You meet other factions, and can align with them, ask them favors, threaten them, trade technology, loan them money, etc.
