Alright, here is the toned down version of a virus:
A virus is not a living thing. Bacteria, cells, fungi can all replicate on their own by dividing but a virus cannot.
A virus is made up of two parts, a protein coat and DNA (or RNA) inside. Sometimes the protein coat is really complex (some viruses look like the moon lander) and sometimes the coat is just a ball. What happens is the protein coat attaches to the membranes of cells. Once the virus attaches it injects its DNA into the cell.
Now, to replicate and divide, a cell has machines. But, the virus DNA takes over these machines so instead of making the cell divide, these machines make more viruses which then go off and invade more cells.
