Traditional vs. Contemporary

Hey,
I was wondering if you guys find traditional, hymnal-type music or contempory, praise-type music more meaningful. I know that a lot of contemporary music has been accused of being repetitive and cliched...and I think that some of the old hymns are really beautiful, though some are a bit too dry for me. But I like both. Any thoughts? Also, do you think that one style illustrates Christianity and Scripture more than another?

You're free to dance, /forget about your two left feet,/And You're free to sing, /even joyful noise is music to me,/And free to love, /'cause I've given you my love and It's made you free.

ditto.... both hymns and contemporary worship songs serve a purpose in worship. But Scripturally and theologically speaking I would have to say that some of the old hymns are winners, hands-down. Not "When the Roll is Called Up Yonder" or "I'll Fly Away" or anything, but hymns like "When I Survey", "Come, Thou Fount", "Holy, Holy, Holy", etc. are packed with so many truths about God and His work in us and the world.

That commentary might seem a little strange considering that I'm a leader in a contemporary praise band, but I think I'm actually partial to the words of old hymns!

Why not do both? Rearrange old hymns into modern music. My praise team does a great arrangement of "I stand Amazed" that I just love, and we do it all with modern instruments..
