Question song writing software

I use a Mac and want to be able to write scored music on the computer but do not want to invest a ton of money on software more sophisticated than I need simply to digitally create a musical score. Any advice on software and hardware needed (minimal)? Thanks

I think the free version of Finale will be able to do what you need:

Finale Notepad is the most atrocious notation software I've ever used. But if you are on a Mac, that's the best you will find for free.

Isn't it possible to do that with GarageBand? I'm not sure seeing as I've never actually tried it. Assuming you already have it, though, it would be worth trying out.

Yeah, there's some basic scoring functions in Garage Band. Just create a new MIDI track and then in the edit window, you can switch between the keyboard roll or a musical staff.
