Rainier:

Thanks. That's interesting. Do you think that some heavy metal might one day be considered classical?

I think rock music will always be classified as rock music. I think it's different enough from Bach, personally, that people would probably feel silly lumping them together.

I see.

Anyway, I think that Abba's Benny Anderson claimed to have been influenced by Bach's counterpoint. And you can hear it, too, in some of the tunes he composed. I wonder where one draws the line between classical Bach counterpoint, and Bach influenced counterpoint...

I think all good music informs and influences all other music. Any composer nowadays who composes classical music is influenced by modern popular song, while popular song musicians are influenced not only by listening to classical music, but by referencing the basis popular song has in Western Classical tradition as well as traditional folk song.

The history of music is like a huge pantry from which today's musicians can pull out anything they want from.

You see, it all depends on how far it goes. Punk music has its wild side. But then there are elements of it which can be incorporated into somewhat 'milder' music. I guess what I mean is that elements of that kind of music can be absorbed into more well established styles and genres.

Compare punk hairstyles. The 'authentic', original punk hair was wild, certainly. But there are ppl who decide to go for a tufty look and may even incorporate a bit of pink streaking in the bangs, etc., but which doesn't look 'wild' at all, and might even be worn by a favorite churchgoing aunt, who is actually anything but 'wild'.
