| Really?.... hmm... a friend recomended it to me... she (sometimes Christian... sometimes not...more times not) thought I should read it. Have you read it? is it worth reading to see where this stuff is coming from to possible help her in understanding the Truth?

I'm not saying that every book she would suggest is going to be riddled with problematic theology, but because of her wavering faith, I wouldn't leap wholeheartedly into any book she thought full of great wisdom.
Honestly, I've heard that the message behind "The Secret" is contrary to anything Biblical. I have well trusted, Christian friends who have been exposed to it's teaching through family or co-workers and the one thing they agree on is that it is a teaching that should be avoided. However, I have no personal experience with "The Secret" so this is all second-hand information.

| I think the general idea is that when you think about things that you want, you send out "energy waves" (I'm not sure what the book calls them exactly) which attract the things that you want. For example, I've heard of people who after reading the book put up pictures around their house of the things they want to 'focus' their thoughts.
The flip side to this is that those who think about negative things will send out negative energy waves and attract negative things in their lives.
Though I agree with the conclusion of the book, that if you think about something long and hard your more likely to attain it, I disagree with how they drew the conclusion and all that stuff about thought waves attracting things. I think that if you think about something long enough and want it hard enough you will be more likely to accomplish the things necessary to achieve it. For example, I really want to go to med school. In constantly thinking about med school I am more motivated to do good in school and therefore more likely to get into med school. Likewise, if someone is pessimistic and constantly dwells on negative things then they will be more likely to attract negative things because only other negative people will want to hang around them and they will generally be less ambitious.
That being said, I haven't read the book for the only reason that there a number of books which sound way more interesting to me that I haven't read. In the end I think people who read it will become more successful simply because the book will provide motivation to go out and attain their goals but I don't think the philosophy and science behind the book espouses a Christian worldview. You'd probably get the same thing conclusion and motivation that's in 'The Secret' if you just read the Bible which is at least based on truth. |
