Ryan, I appreciate your concern that people who come to CGR see it as a God-honoring place. It really ought to be, right? Here's the problem - I have never yet met a non-Christian who said "You know why I'm not a Christian? Smilies with yellow mugs." You say it might turn people away; I submit that the ONLY people it turns away are
Christians who are looking for something to get upset about. If this smiley upsets them, then undoubtedly something else that we talk about will do so, as well. Perhaps the
gigantic thread about alcohol and tobacco. On an ecumenical forum like this, you have to realize that there are Christians of
all stripes here, and in order to make an impact for Christ, you may have to hang out with unruly people with whom you disagree.
As for not doing things here that we wouldn't do in Church, that standard would get very restrictive, very quickly. You wouldn't be on the internet during Church (presumably), either. And husbands and wives wouldn't have sex in Church. That doesn't say anything about the ethics of the act itself; obviously it's a GOOD thing for married couples to enjoy the conjugal union. But I have to point out that many of the traditions represented at CGR have
alcoholic beverages in Church every Sunday - they have wine at Communion.
All this being said, I
did submit a brown-mug version of the smiley the first time this controversy broke out (to make it look more like root beer), but it was determined by the Admin staff of the time (who are now gone) that such a replacement would be to bow down to legalism. I disagree with that sentiment, though, and I wish fervently that we had replaced the smiley with the brown version a LONG time ago.
