| Cheapstakes. My family actually bought the registered version when we discovered the game because we loved it so much.

| whatever, you're just nitpicking and being argumentative. I made a generalization. Generalizations always come with exceptions. I'm sorry if you are too blind to see it. |

Half-Life 2 could've been software HL1 running at 640x480 and it'd still be a great game.
As for gameplay, it's rather a hit and miss today, particularly with EA Games and, in some cases, Sierra.
If you're a PC Gamer (more so than console), you'll have notice the appalling effort companies have been making when making a multi-platform release. There's often no mouse support, you can't change your video settings and you generally want your money back.
As for how Need For Speed's getting, ever played NFS1? That was made in the days of 3.1, the sad thing being it's more realistic than the latest ones (Which aren't realistic at all).
Take LucasArts and who the hire to develop the games. The Star Wars games have been poor lately and the developers can't seem to code properly. Battlefront 2, KOTOR2, etc.

I recall frequent crashing in DOS 4.x, and 1.x not even having sub-directories. 3.2 was a pretty good DOS, and 5 was excellent. 6 was the DOS version of WinME.
Windows 3.0 crashed almost contantly... but blue screen with page fault / general protection fault. 3.1 was better, but still crashed a great deal (don't think you can multitask), and ISA was rife with memory address and IRQs.
3.11 was more stable as an underlying OS, but the WfW adds created all sorts of new problems... and don't get me started on WinSock under WfW. Quote:
And the quality of games, does anyone else agree that the games on 3.1 and DOS were awesome? Like Commander Keen or Secret Agent/Crystal Caves. I want to make a DOS box now. | Halo 3, Call of Duty, Half-Life, Team Fortress, Civilization.. or (still very much windows) Kinghts of the Old Republic... most of my faavorite games.
Don't get me wrong: I loved Wing Commander (had to change my sound hardware to get compatabale), the Infocom Games, MOO, etc.
I think that hindsight is usually done with rose-colored glasses. |

| I remember DOS 6.2.2 and Win 3.1.1 on my old 386 machines...Mac System 1 thru 6 (the true classic Mac OS's...and no 5) on my Mac Plus and Classic models...and cp/m running on a Kaypro II that I had for a while.
Thankfully, running OSX on my new Core 2 Duo iMac makes me forget all those dinosaurs. |
