Gmail now has IMAP

yup, Google has made IMAP available for GMail. Here are instructions on how to setup IMAP.

I've had it going for a while now with Mail. Works pretty good. The only problem is, and I don't know if this is just a thing with Mail and how it interacts with Gmail or if it's just Gmail's implementation of IMAP, when I delete an email, instead of sending it to the trash on the server, it adds a label "Deleted Messages". It also happens with sent messages getting a label "Sent Messages". Meh, still way better than POP.

It might be that your client is moving deleted items to a Deleted Messages folder, which Gmail interprets as a label. Same with Sent. I haven't used Gmail's IMAP yet.

I think you're right about the Trash. I just now noticed that although I do have it set to store deleted messages on the server, I also had it set to send it to my Trash, which must have been why it did what you said. I turned that option off, so we'll see how it goes.

I found out today that deleting in Mail just sends the message to the Gmail archive. At least when it was adding labels, I could easily select all the ones I deleted and actually send them to the Gmail trash, so I switched it back.

Heaven knows how often I want to reminisce about the fact that I got a new friend request on myspace 3 years ago

one day you will be thinking, man, who was that guy who asked to be my friend on myspace 3 years ago. and you will say to yourself, Self, I should have listened to Bryan, that silly Christian Hedonist, and not deleted that mail.

no I know what you mean. I've even started deleting those things and other ads that I get.

I don't delete facebook emails. I label them and ignore them. I like it that way.
