A warning to any AIM users on Vista

Just so you don't experience what I've gone through tonight, here's a quick notice.

DO NOT install any AIM 6.5 updates if you are running Windows Vista. If you do so, you will likely not be able to use the Windows Networking Center, lose audio in many programs, lose ability to log into non-admin accounts, and experience corruption of WMI.

The latest version that is known to not cause problems on Vista is AIM 6.5.3.12.

If you have already experienced this, uninstall AIM and do a system restore back to before you updated it. After that, you should be able to use the version I posted above. If all else fails, follow some instructions I found here on MS TechNet.

I find it ridiculous how an AIM update can corrupt the core of Vista. Either AIM or Microsoft needs to provide a fix to this. I should be able to use the latest version of my IM program without frying my OS.

The Red X over my network activity indicator had me wondering. Sorry to hear you also fell victim to this. I'm about to go back to the version I posted above. I'll tell you if Vista still functions after that.

People still use AIM?

That's kind of shocking. Bugs between the relationship of the OS and programs are to be expected... but I don't think I've heard of anything quite this drastic.

After using AIM Ad Hack, it's a very streamlined client. It's the only messenger program I use, so why would I want Trillian or Pidgin?

Evidently a Windows Update in the past had triggered the exact same thing. For some reason, this version of AIM is causing this to manifest itself again. It's the most drastic thing I've had happen from a software update too.

And Andrew, I'm able to run 6.5.3.12 without any problems. That's a safe version to use. Good luck with your problem.
