Since I received a user comment about this, let me elaborate:

BIll Watterson often touches on logic, linguistics, and philosophy. When we learn about fallacies (straw man arguments, appeals to false authority, ad hominem) there are often Calvin and Hobbes strips that fit.

It's one thing for my students to chuckle at a strip - but when they can explain the joke, they're beginning to grasp the nature of humor at a deeper level.

Much of humor, especially Calvin and Hobbes, is based on intentionally breaking proper logical thought.

I may post some of my favorite Calvin and Hobbes to use in class, but Google "Calvin and Hobbes" and logic, linguistics, etc. and you'll find many examples.

Hope this further intrigues ye fans of Bill Watterson.

I've been a Calvin and Hobbes reader since I was 8 years old! I recently dug through our boxes of books and found my collection of Calvin and Hobbes. I own ten, my brother has one that I don't as well as my parents. Therefore, there are four books I have not read, and six that I need to complete my collection.
So I decided to read through all of mine again, in the best chronological order that I can. It's been Calvin and Hobbes overdose lately, I forgot how much I loved these comics and how genius Bill Watterson is. So many of those strips are metaphorical or just straight bluntly stating Watterson's world views.
I can honestly say that I have learned more vocabulary from Calvin and Hobbes than I have from high school.

I'm in the midst of "Yukon Ho!" right now, I'll probably finish it today.

"There is no peace on earth," I said,
"For hate is strong, and mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men."

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
“God is not dead, nor does He sleep;
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail
With peace on earth, good will to men.”
