Music is a ministry

All of you out there that consider yourself in the music ministry, please post scriptural reasons why it's a ministry. Me, I feel it's a ministry too, and I just wanted to start a positive encouraging thread along those lines. My thing, since I was a Petra "nerd" and all, is Chenaniah:

2 Chronicles 15
22 Chenaniah, leader of the Levites, was instructor in charge of the music, because he was skillful; 23 Berechiah and Elkanah were doorkeepers for the ark; 24 Shebaniah, Joshaphat, Nethanel, Amasai, Zechariah, Benaiah, and Eliezer, the priests, were to blow the trumpets before the ark of God; and Obed-Edom and Jehiah, doorkeepers for the ark.
25 So David, the elders of Israel, and the captains over thousands went to bring up the ark of the covenant of the LORD from the house of Obed-Edom with joy. 26 And so it was, when God helped the Levites who bore the ark of the covenant of the LORD, that they offered seven bulls and seven rams. 27 David was clothed with a robe of fine linen, as were all the Levites who bore the ark, the singers, and Chenaniah the music master with the singers. David also wore a linen ephod.

And

1 Chronicles 15:16
Then David spoke to the leaders of the Levites to appoint their brethren to be the singers accompanied by instruments of music, stringed instruments, harps, and cymbals, by raising the voice with resounding joy.

Are you arguing that music must be a ministry? Or simply that it can be?

I think that music should be a ministry to God....but only because I'm sick and tired of hearing the old line, "music is just music."

well if music is just music, I seriously believe your missing out on something.

But this issue can get really REALLY tense to the right audiences, so I'll just leave my opinion stand. And I'd point out James 3...just the way I interpret parts of it I guess..

I agree with Darth Dapor in that music should be a ministry to God. After all He created music to be, not just a vehicle for worship, but also a medium for Him to speak through. Check out 1 Chronicles 25:1 where the Word mentions Levites who prophesied on their instruments.

Did you ever notice that the musicians went out "before" the army. Whether to instill faith and courage into the army or to intimidate or discourage the enemy, music is an all important tool and weapon of the Army of God.

While my wife and I are both in charge of the music ministry in our church, I have been involved in a vision for a new type of music ministry. It has been evolving for the past 5 years as God has been leading me through different circumstances including not playing for nearly a year. I am starting to feel the vision is coming towards completion as I have begun a personal Bible study that will likely take 6 - 10 months for me to finish. Much of the focus can be found in Psalms 96:1 - "Sing to the Lord a new song; Sing to the Lord, all the earth." I believe that we all have songs to sing to praise the Lord and to encourage ourselves and others in our Christian walk.
