| It is obviously not black and white.
I do believe that a line should be drawn somewhere. I also believe that it is a pretty arbitrary line, regardless where it is drawn. Before some major injuries, I was a fairly good distance runner with a decent amount of potential. I've run a lot of races, and I can certainly understand an athlete wanting their results to be natural. "I want to know that I won that race, not the steroids/creatine/whatever." I understand it, and agree with it. But....I watched my diet. I carbo-loaded before a race. I never once said "I want to know that I know that I won the race, not the carbo-loading," or "I want to know that I am that fast, and that it wasn't just because I was properly hydrated". I'd still eat bananas to get potassium to avoid cramps, etc.
And what is the difference between all these things? Carbo-loading gave me an advantage that I wouldn't have had had I not done it. If anything, it is all just a matter of different degrees of the same exact thing, and even that is debatable.
If it is banned, athletes should follow the rules, and it is unethical for them not to. Otherwise, have at it.
