| Weekly Challenge #1 9/23-9/29 This week's challenge will be panning/motion blur.
find a subject in motion, and slow your shutter down, blur the background and keep the foreground sharp.
Rules:
1) Photo must be taken between 9/23-9/29 and submitted by 11:59pm PDT 9/29. Entries submitted afterwards will not be counted
2) Exif data must remain in the image. Don't use Save for web in photoshop for instance. If you're not sure if it's being stripped, grab something like Opanda to view exif data. Seeing the settings is half the fun. If your host (or attaching them to the forums) strips the exif, drop me a PM and i'll host 'em for you)
3) make things interesting
4) aside from things in motion, you can do this on anything you want, so be creative and have fun! |

| Haha....maybe I'll wait for an easier challenge. [makes a note to finally sign up for those photography classes she's been meaning to take for oh....6 years now]
I can't wait to see everyone else's, however! (And maybe I'll get brave and mess around with this a bit...)

| Gosh... I don't even know how to do that.

| I have a good one of these, but it's old. This one will be especially hard for me now without a tripod to at least keep vertical motion still. |

| A good practice would be to have someone ride a bike down the road.
Stand on the sidewalk as they go by you.
Follow them with your camera - move your camera in the same motion as they...don't go too slow or too fast but keep the same pace.
Don't stop until after your shutter is closed, and don't press the shutter until you're already moving your camera along with your subject

| you can do it you guys. besides, it's not like there are prizes. The goals are to practice new things and get better rather than doing the same thing.
I have never used a tripod for panning, but i have gotten a few good shots. Hopefully wally will chime in as well, as I know he's gotten a few good ones in the last year as well. |

It would be pretty lame of me to be the one to come up with the whole challenge idea and then bail on the first one because I think it's difficult. Like you said, it being difficult is kinda the point. |

| Ahh yes, the elusive "panning" ability. I've heard quite a lot of people make this out to be the pinnacle of what's physically difficult in photography although I'm not entirely convinced of it. Especially in the digital age where you can take a ton of pics with no repercussions.
This is of course not to be read as I land perfect pan shots everytime. I certainly don't call myself a professional or anything, but you guys should atleast give it a shot, it's not nearly as difficult as it's made out to be. I'll try to get a few shots over the weekend and post them up as well as some others I've taken previously.

| I may try, for me...what the hardest part seems is the Exif data stuff. I don't have a clue what that even means. (I used to have these delusions that I knew things about computers...) I have no doubt that I can try to take a shot like this (none may come out, but at least I tried) but it's the after stuff that gets me...

The aperture used, the shutter used, ISO used, wether the flash had fired or not, the time of day etc...
Do you have Adobe Bridge?

No, I'm not so lucky that I have any Adobe products. Remember, I'm only a sad photographer want to be who is too broke for proper classes.
I typically use Macromedia Fireworks for my image editing, which is not nearly so well suited to photography as I'm sure adobe is.

| Today a random parade was going through town, so I thought I'd practice on the panning technique. I think I got one that was decent, but it's of a tractor, and quite boring IMO (unless you count the irony of pan blurring adding the feel of intense speed when... it's an effing tractor). I suppose if by the end of the week I got nothing better, I'll submit it, but I'll hold off for now. |

#13 | | Cool enough Administrator | Does anybody have any idea how one might go about doing this on a point and shoot? I have no idea how to slow my shutter speed.
Man. I wish I had held out for a DSLR. |

Actually, I'm in!
I should practice that anyway. Way to force me into it.
Oh yeah... can we do more than one?
