In your case, it's completely understandable to take something regularly. That's as good a reason as any to take something regularly. I was speaking for myself, obviously, because it's rare that I am in pain to the point where I cannot stand it for very long. I'm lucky enough not to have any regular pain; even my appendix-gap phantom pains are fairly few and far between. But I remember the two times in the SF hospital (last year, post-op) when I clicked my PCA button and gave myself a shot of morphine, and how horrible I felt after the stuff went into my body. I felt worse with it in my system than I did before. I'm just not keen on drugging myself overly much to begin with, but that experience cemented my standings on giving myself drugs to combat pain. Definitely take them if needed (I also had a pain episode in the same hospital that scared me - I woke up and hadn't taken a thing all day), and have no reservations if you do need to. But if you can reasonably hold off, that is preferable.
That is what I try to do. I hate taking meds. I hate it, but it is necessary. Even though it sucks! I try not to take them. I only take them when absolutely necessary. Sometimes I find myself refusing to take them, then reaping the consequences later.

Quote:
That's mostly my take on it. I mean, if you genuinely need meds, then you just need them. But if you are the average person with little aches here and there, it's probably a better idea not to medicate yourself too much.
My sister is the little aches and pains kind of person. She takes ibuprofen all the time, and I don't understand how she can do it.

I need an opinion:

Would the term "chinese blueprint" be offensive to you? Its one I hear a lot that refers to sending a blueprint, but more importantly, a semi-disassembled electronic product for ease of seeing how it goes together. Its used a lot in Chinese factories as most unskilled workers can't read a blueprint, but they can copy what they see. Anyway, in some of my business dealings I have been encountering the term a lot lately. In fact, I have needed some, in putting some amps back together that, um, were a bit toasted. Is the term offensive to you or not?

I have no understanding of Chinese culture, but I feel funny asking for a Chinese blueprint as a term. I do not think it seems derogatory, but I do not want to contribute to something that could be seen as wrong.

pardon my ignorance please. but I know you get both cultures to a degree.

Art's old, reopened blog is hoppin', also. If you should want to hear his side of things, that'd be the place to go.

That's exactly why Art and I like it.

We first saw the bulk of the commercial on TV, not knowing what it was for. When the song got about to the chorus, we turned to look at each other, eyebrows slightly raised. As we looked back, the Carl's Jr. announcer mentioned the sandwich. Art and I again locked gazes as we burst into laughter. Good times.

I would guess that it's because your sister hasn't had a trial where her pain threshold has been tested. I know that before my appendix burst, I had never felt pain that horrible in my life. Everything else suddenly paled in comparison. I now know what a "10" feels like.

In your case, though, it's understandable that you need them. But I also know what it's like to wish you didn't. I was living on pain meds when I got out of the hospital last year. Not fun. But at least I learned about where my threshold is, and when I absolutely need to take something or sleep it off.

I have honestly never heard the term before. By the way you're describing it, I can see where it would seem a little off, but I don't know that I would necessarily categorize it as offensive without ever hearing the term before.

Quote:

That's an admirable attitude. I think if someone with such an attitude unknowingly says something off, it's completely forgivable. So at least in that regard, you needn't worry.

Quote:

Somewhat. I'm quite familiar with general Asian culture and customs because I was raised in an area that was almost completely Asian. I actually don't know so much about white American culture in and of itself. Whatever I do know is probably so ingrained in me that I don't even know where the line is drawn.

This all kind of reminds me of the time a lady affiliated with an international missionary organization came to chat with some of my ICS (InterCultural Studies) classmates over lunch. She referred to an Asian person from her son's group as a "chinaman." Once I got over the shock of actually hearing the word used for the first time, I assessed that she didn't have a clue that what she'd said was a derogatory term. I still wish I'd gotten a chance to tell her about the word, but it wouldn't have been polite to call her out in front of a crowd of people.

Stolen from my husband.

Are you happy with your given name?
I didn't use to like any part of my name, first, middle or last. Now, I have come to terms with my first name, and I don't mind my middle name. And since my last name is not my maiden name, I don't mind that either.

What is your guaranteed weeping movie?
Gosh. Each time I watch a movie that made me bawl, I build up a crying tolerance to it. They used to be Anastasia and Ever After, but I don't even think I cry at Ever After anymore.

What is the one thing you like to do alone?
Hmm. Sometimes, it's nice to just sit and be alone with your thoughts. I like seeing where my mind takes me when I don't have anything else to occupy it.

What’s a major fear or yours?
No more Art.

Are you a pyromaniac?
A little bit.

Do you know anyone famous?
A few sort of famous people.

Describe your bed.
Queen Tempurpedic with craptastic support on my side.

What type of character would you play in a movie?
The shy, misunderstood, artistic-ish girl who winds up snagging her man in the end.

What do you carry with you at all times?
Usually my purse. Failing that, I bring the most essential contents of it, which would be keys, wallet and/or ID+money, and my cell phone.

How do you eat an apple?
I prefer to cut it up. I hate getting apple skin inbetween my teeth.

Do you prefer to stand out or blend in?
There are certain times I don't mind standing out, but for the most part, I prefer being the behind-the-scenes person.

What kind of first impression do you think you give people?
I don't know for sure. I think a lot of kids thought I was stuck-up when I was little, because I liked to keep to myself a lot. It kind of happens when you are an only child. But now, I try to at least put on a friendly face when meeting someone new. I also seem to have a knack for finding those who seem out of place in a new environment and helping them feel more comfortable.

Favorite communication method?
Face to face. Though I must say, posting via CGR are also up there.

What is your hidden talent?
My inner klutz has been outed. I used to be able to fart on command. [/random fact]

Do you own a Bible?
I've owned a few. A giant study one, a smaller one with my name engraved on the cover (from my old AoG church when I moved up to the youth group), and a pocket one that I brought with me.

How many drinks before you’re tipsy?
One bottle of Mike's on an empty stomach.

Do you have a problem changing clothes in front of friends?
If it's only maybe one other person and I'm completely comfortable in front of them, I don't mind so much. Otherwise, I do have an issue.

What should you be doing instead of this?
Getting ready to shower, or perhaps cleaning up the kitchen area post-meal.

Who was the last person who called you?
I guess Art? Breeners and I talked last night, but I called her.

Are you ready?
A better question is, are you?

What is the last gift you gave someone?
Umm. Cooking lunch for Art and myself?

Does everything happen for a reason?
For the most part. Not every reason is particularly profound, though.

What is your biggest headache lately?
A literal headache. Well, it's not up to my head yet. My neck and shoulders are quite stiff.

What color is your bedroom?
White, like the rest of the apartment. I wish we could paint the walls.

Do you consider yourself to be a nice person?
I certainly try to be. I don't always succeed, however.

Have you ever pierced your own body part or that of someone else?
Not on my own, no. *shudders*

What kind of watch do you wear?
I don't. My cell phone is my watch.

What’s one car you will never buy?
A toaster-car.

How many online journals do you read daily?
Probably around 10-15, depending on which ones get updated when I look. I'm apparently subscribed to 46 journals, according to my CGR folder.

Do you cry in front of your friends?
Not often at all. Art is probably the exception, and even then I tend to run more often than not when I feel the tears start to come.

Would you die to save the life of someone you dearly love?
No question.

Do you have any married friends?
A few. My age set from home is mostly unmarried yet.

Do you like thunderstorms?
Not so much.

What was your first job?
Um. My homemaking duties count? Or maybe my unpaid volunteer work with the elementary school kids?

What was the last thing you typed before this survey?
A UC to someone, I think.

Who was your last IM to?
Darned if I know.

Favorite word lately?
I don't know. I have phases with words, and I'm not really in the middle of one now.

What’s the strangest thing that’s happened to you in the past week?
Strange? Not a lot of strange occurrences around here.

You have a crush, don’t you?
No, but I wouldn't mind drinking one. I'm thirsty.

Who?
What?

What is the little physical habit that gives away your insecure moments?
I start to fidget a little.

Do you talk a lot?
I type far more than I talk, generally.

What do you typically order at a bar?
The last time I was at a bar, I had a Roy Rogers and the most delicious onion rings ever.

Name ONE trait you hate in a person.
Fakeness.

Favorite writing utensil?
Gel pens are fun. I also like mechanical pencils.

What’s one thing you’re a loser at?
Life? I mean, in terms of worldly standards, I really am.

When’s the last time you made someone cry?
Um. I don't know how long it's been exactly. Within 3/4 of a year?

Do you like the rain?
Not entirely.

Who was the last person you talked to in person?
Art, before he went to shower.

What are your plans for the weekend?
RosevilleFest with Breeners and Timmay. (And whoever else wants to come!)

How much money would it take for you to give up the internet for a year?
Goodness. How much debt are we in, again? [/plotting]

Where’s your ideal marriage location?
I think where Art and I got married was quite nice. Though it also would've been lovely to have a wedding on a warm beach on a beautiful tropical island..

What do you cook the best?
Fried rice, probably. Though I'm getting better at some of the other dishes I make regularly.

What kind of books do you like to read?
I don't know. It entirely depends on my mood. There's a lot of things I'll read if they strike my fancy.

If you win the lottery, what would you like to do?
No more debt, for one. Buy a place, for another. Buy a second small apartment or something in the SF area, for quick vacations. And probably get Art a new car.

If you don’t like a person, how do you show it?
I don't. That's unclassy. I just try not to spend so much time with them.

How long have you known your best friend?
I've known Art almost 2 1/2 years.

What are you listening to?
The construction workers gabbing rather loudly outside. And now, Art is playing Big Brain Academy.

What was the last thing you laughed at?
Hm. I don't know.

What do you wish you were doing right now?
I wish my hands were a bit less greasy.

What musical instrument do you wish you could play?
I can play a bunch of instruments, but not terribly well. I wish I could play the ones I know much better.

What’s the funniest experience you ever had at your job?
Um.

If you could speak any language, which language would you speak?
Cantonese, maybe Mandarin, and Spanish. Mayyybe Japanese.

What fingers did you use to answer this… RIGHT NOW?
*raises eyebrow* I use all my fingers to type.

When is the next time you will kiss someone
Soon enough. Art's a little preoccupied with the game right now.

What color are your eyes?
Brown. Not a super-dark brown though.

What were you doing at midnight last night?
Commenting that Art was feeling sleepy already.

Are you left-handed?
No.

What’s for dinner tonight?
We'll see.

Ever been to Disneyland/world?
Nope.

Do you have a favorite cartoon character?
Eh. Maybe something from FMA or Inuyasha.

Would you chew gum after someone else already has?
I wouldn't chew the same piece of gum. But I might chew a new piece.

Do you call your friend’s parents “Mrs.” and “Mr.”?
I have before. As I mentioned in Rainer-Jon's blog, you're supposed to call people who are on the age level of your parents "Auntie" and "Uncle" in Asian culture.

What do you call your mom?
Not much. I mean, Ma or Mom.

What about your dad?
He's Dad.

I'd say good morning back, but I seem to have spent my morning catching up on sleep. So, good afternoon.

I am poking in your blog now, though I will readily admit to my lurking tendencies everywhere lately.

So. I'm hopelessly lost basically everywhere, and teh_RosevilleFest is sadly over. However, just because Art is away at work doesn't mean I can't still go out and play. It seems Tim, for one, still has some energy left, and maybe we can convince Sabrina to come back and put up with us for one more day. Soyes. We shall see what takes place this afternoon.
