Russian Music

anyone got any good reccomendations? I love the dark sombre tone of Russian music and to my dismay I have a very few good cds of it? I do speak and read Russian at a decent rudimentary level, if that in any way helps. (I can navigate the web in Russian is roughly what I mean)

Modest Mussorgsky was a genius when it came to capturing the melancholy Russian feel.
The men considered to be "true" Russian composers at their time were called the "kuchka" (handfull). They are Mily Balakirev, Cesar Cui, Modest Mussorgsky, Alexander Borodin and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. Tchaikovsky was not considered "Russian" since he wrote in more of a Western European style (which is why he is the most popular nowadays).

EDIT: Wait, are you talking about classical music, or modern popular music?

classical or what would be considered traditional folk music. I'll look into the composers mentioned.

If you go into iTunes, go to Music--> Classical, and there's an ad called Classical Music for Dummies on the page there. Click on there, and somewhere there is a collection of Russian classical music. I don't know if it offers anything different than what you have, but it's worth a look.

He's not Russian, but you'd probably enjoy a lot of Bartok (don't feel like finding the weird symbols).
