Also... get Pat Metheny's Letter From Home, some Return To Forever, might as well pick up Steely Dan's Aja, not necessarily jazz, but it's still awesome.

Let's go all out and throw Mike Stern, John McLaughlin, Larry Coryell, and Fareed Haque in there, too.

Seriously? I've always wanted to find a big band arrangement... Whose arrangement is it? Do you know?

I don't have the folder with me at home, but I can check at rehearsal Wednesday. I'll get back to you.

Norah is far from jazz.
My feeling is she has many jazz tendancies in her vocal approach. If you stuck her in front of a jazz quartet to do say...God Bless The Child, Autumn Leaves, or The Man I Love. You'd find her handling herself quite well. She may not have the overall range of someone like Ella, but she could hold her own. I wish she would do a strictly jazz project.

Listen to "Peg" on Aja and you'll hear jazz/rock fusion at it best. The guitar solo by Jay Graydon is soooo sweet. I love the first few chords you hear at the head of the song...

Some of my favourite Jazz records;

Dave Brubeck - Time Out
Eric Dolphy - Out to Lunch
Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um
Yusef Lateef - Eastern Sounds
John Coltrane - Giant Steps
Wes Montgomery - The Incredible Jazz Guitar
Miles Davis - In a Silent Way
Roland Kirk - The Inflated Tear

And I'd also recommend getting a Billie Holiday compilation because she's so great.

i started out on compilation albumns. i had this one calledjazz on a summers day
it had heaps of good stuff, like miles davis, dave brubeck, louis armstrong, weather report, jimmy smith.

these days i like listening to: Diana Krall, Duke Ellington, and the crazy stuff they play on aeroplanes and the free samples you get on new computers

When I was a kid my mom ruled the house after the early Saturday cartoons went off. One of the albums she played was The Sound of Music Soundtrack. From there I heard John Coltrane's and later Grant Green's version of My Favorite Things. That experience would say pick a song and see how different artist interpreted it. And for most modern songs will lead you to Smooth Jazz as a start point.

Somehow I discvered my father's copy of Freddie Hubbard's First Light. From the liner notes on that album I made outward circles discovered George Benson before he hit big for an example. That would suggest take someone you like and see who he worked with.

I woulds suggest Ken Burns' PBS series on Jazz. That should give you an overall look at the historian's ideal of what were the important moments and representative styles of jazz, at least until 1970. 70's fushion and beyond were barely touched.

I wouldn't call Bella Flex Bluegrass!!! To a bluegrasser those would be fighting words. His most popular stuff is pretty far from Bluegrass. I'm also not sure I'd recommend listening to him to a new Jazzer either. If you want to start with the earlier jazz styles and work your way forward, I would start with Louis Armstrong's "Complete Hot Five and Seven Recordings", then move up to Maybe some Big band stuff Benny Goodman, Glen Miller, etc. Then Maybe some Be-bob: Dizzy Gelespie (sp?), for some more modern stuff Chick Corea, Weather Report, Stanley Clark. Lots of choices out there, but buying CDs can get expensive. Get down to the local library, and start borrowing whatever they have. Listen to anything and everything you can get your hands on, some you'll like some you won't, but you'll learn what you like before you invest a lot of money.
