I don't mind having more footage, but what I hate is when they release a new cut 6 months later with 3 minutes of extra footage and new special features. Do we really need 3 extra minutes tacked onto Elektra? Does two extra minutes (10 years after the films release) add anything to Con Air?
With Daredevil and The Punisher, they released director's cuts which added 20-30 minutes. In both cases the studios wanted quick moving action films. So the director had to cut major subplots which added a great deal of depth to the stories. The only reason they released the directors cuts was because the films did well on DVD and they decided it justified giving the director a chance to release his preferred cut. I'd like it if there were more of this style of Director's Cut where you're actually seeing the director's preferred version of the film...not a fabricated version of the film with a handful of scenes which nobody wanted in the film which are only being released now so that the studio can make a few more bucks.
I would have liked it if they'd released the director's cut of Rambo in the first place, but at least this isn't just them trying to sucker me out of more money (well it still kind of is). It's the director trying to get his preferred version of the film out there.
I'm a bit confused by why they cut the footage from Rambo. The movie was under 90 minutes with the credits. The DVD had some of the deleted scenes, and they were good, meaningful scenes. They say they cut them due to pacing. The scenes at the beginning made the film take to long to get going, and the scenes towards the end slowed down the momentum. I can understand why they'd want to hurry up to get to the action, but the end of the film seemed a bit too rushed. As soon as they got out of the camp we were thrust into the final show down. So pausing for a moment to tell us more about what's going on in the characters heads seems like a worthwhile thing to do.
