| 1994 Mitsubishi 216 mph standing mile So I volunteered at the "shoot-out" portion of the SORC (Sandhills Open Road Challenge) this past Friday. Among other things, I was rather amazed by the fastest car at the event - a little 1994 Mitsubishi that did the standing mile and was clocked at 216 mph!!! Most everyone at the event was impressed with this, but all the newspaper articles I can find about it make it sound like the weather or whatever.... example: http://www.communitycorrespondent.co...y.php?id=17433
Anyone else ever witnessed something like this?
Nate

| I wouldn’t be that surprised, as far as having the power to do it, if it was a Mitsubishi Evolution. They come with all wheel drive, and are easy to modify.
But where it is surprising is that their shape isn’t all that slippery (aero dynamic), so there must have been a heap of power, to push it to that speed.
As far as newspapers are concerned, often the people that are sent to cover these events are not car fans.
I went to a classic car tarmac rally a couple of years back. There was and original GT40 race car (worth a couple of million), an original Bugatti race-car from the 1920s (wroth even more) and a Jowette Jupiter (only 24 left in the world). It was pretty cool, the pits are open to everyone and we could go up a check out every part of every car. Not only that but these cars were raced, not just raced but pushed hard (the GT40 was the fastest car for the weekend). It was one of the best weekends of my life.
When we saw the newspaper article the on Monday and it was pretty weak. He made it sound like we were standing around looking at a stamp collection.

| it's an evo2 I believe. I can't remember if this is an actual evo or a mirage conversion.
Either way, it's a GT4202R running upwards of 50psi.
To give you an idea in 1/4 mile terms, this car should be capable of mid 8 second passes at about 160mph.
You don't really realize how hard it is to do the mile, when you think about the fact that at that speed you're traveling a tremendous distance every second. |

Or that your motor is generating massive loads of heat with 50 psi and that each millisecond at WOT is more dangerous for the coolant system, oiling system, etc. |

I mean, I do my fair share of spirited driving, but banging through all 5 gears after a hard launch and pulling to redline in 5th would test my faith in even the 4g.

| The reasons above might be why this guy only took 2 runs down the road at the shoot-out while nearly everyone else took 3. He still had a 54 mile, 2-stage open road race to complete the next morning and I think he was running in the unlimited (average speed over course) class.
