Honest beard-question

People always tell me cutting the beard helps it to develop more the next time. So my question is:

Do I cut it all, or do you trim it, to best achieve this effect?

I've heard this, and if I remember correctly, it is somewhat of a half truth. Cutting a hair makes it grow fater. Therefor, any hair you trim will grow better. But if you don't have any hair to cut in the first place....

If you use a straight razor, the hair grows back quicker due to minuscule deposits of iron oxide.

Ok, I made that up. But, coincidence or not, my facial hair has been growing back quicker since I went to a straight blade.

Everything I've been able to find on this issue indicates that shaving in no way affects the way a hair grows back.
