Ooooh, I nearly disagreed with you there Adam, but you rescued it with the second post. Which addressed all the points I was going to disagree with. So carry on.

| Someone may have already posted a statement similar to this one. But you can't separate yourself from the world or you become a recluse. Jesus never spent all his time inside away from [people. No, so I think music we have to listen to what we think is alright for ourselves, you know if listening to Marilyn Manson is ok or listening to Korn is ok. But if you don't know there's a problem. We should know. I know for myself what's good for me.
The secular world sings about what they are about, whether its drugs, sex, abuse, etc. There are christians that are the same way, who sing about similar if not the same stuff. You can compartmentalize what you want , but that doesn't solve anything. You look at Christian Culture and we have our own Awards for Music, the Dove Awards our own Entertainment which is far behind that of Hollywood. I don't think its inherently bad to listen to anything, but I am speaking from my own standpoint.
If that makes sense let me know, I just kind of spit it all out. |

| re:this whole thing ok ive read many of the posts here and here is what i have to say: I found that no one has said anything about blasphemy in secular music. SLipknot is one band that i find many "christians" listen to...why? i dont know. But anyways that whole thing bothers me. and all these rappers and other artists going around saying "i belive in Jesus, im a christian" but then turning around and spewing filth from their actions and lyrical content. Be careful what you fill your mind with guys, cuz it'll affect you no matter what you think. I listen to secular music alot many of my favorite bands are secualr but i choose what i listen very carefully. be careful "for your enemy the devil is prowling arund like a roaring lion looking for somone to devour".AMEN |

| Are you questioning whether these people are christians because they listen to Slipknot? I'm not sure if this was your intent, but with the quotes around christian, it sure looks that way.

#156 | | Guest | whew! what a job! i just read all ten pages of this thread. i'm going to have go w/ the pro-secular side of this debate. i only started listening to secular music a few years ago. i had been so brainwashed by the popular church thought that christian music is "good" and secular music is bad "bad" that i never questioned it for myself. then i began to realize that their were bands like creed out their whose lyrics can be just as good as any "christian" band. i decided that you just have to be choosey about the secular music you listen to. one of main of the factors for me in choosing what bands i listen to is what my affect it would have on my witness if my non-christian friends saw me listening to this band or that band. as of yet i have not anyone mention bands like P.O.D. i would very much like to hear what these anti-secular people think about listening to them. | |

| music is music. it's only the lyrics that make it secular or Christian. I mean i go to Hillsong church & they're internationally reknown for worship music, & I can tell you that their instrumentalists are very much influenced by secular music. This isnt to say they're evil or anything like that, but the truth is - the world is changing, & in order to be effective to reach the lost in a changing world, u have to keep up with the changing society. This is one of many reasons why Hillsongs are primarily guitar driven, because it attracts the youth - & they do it superbly.
anyways im sure youre all old enough not to let secular lyrics influence your faith cos there are bigger things to worry about! those of you who cant stand secular music, thats cool - but to be that picky means that you also keep the same standards in watching movies.....do u now.....?

| naw naw reags its not even the lyrics that make it christian i reckon, its the person's heart
cause someone could write and christian song and be a satanist, and that wouldn't make the song christian now would it |

| exactly coops.
& why is it the heart that matters? because it reflects in the lyrics, which means that it's the lyrics that differentiates secular music from christian type music as such. if u were to remove lyrics from both secular & 'christian' music, then they'd all be equal - nothing more than music. it's the lyrics & yes, heart, that make it wateva it is intended to be.
PS - you wouldn't happen to have stolen that 'heart' quote from lincoln brewster's 3-4pm workshop at hillsong conference 2001....would you? bwhahahhaha :kgrin: :klol: :keek: :ktongue: :kwink:
