I wouldn't put Fergie in the same category as Floyd or any other artist that has produced
work that has withstood the test of time. I agree that popularity alone or having
a huge ticket draw doesn't mean it's good music. I doubt in 10 years if Fergie will be anything more than a footnote in pop culture history. However I won't be surprised if the Beatles and Dylan along with bands like Pink Floyd let alone Led Zeppelin or Cream will still have their works being listened to by a younger generation of new listeners.
Don't get me wrong I'm not a cheerleader for Pink Floyd or any other artist of my generation
being the end all of all that is good. As a still gigging musician I also love a lot of new talent. This thread was about folks putting up their best album list picks according to different decades
and I had to voice what I thought was a glaring omission.
I have to stick with Larry Noman's sage advice he gave when he considered the art of writing
good songs. He simply asked himself one small question," Will this song still connect with
anyone 10 years after it's recorded?" that goes way beyond just multi platinum sales or
popularity. Sometimes however some artists do create a great work that can stand the test of
time as well as going multi platinum. That album was one of the greats imho and as one who
was in his youth back then I remember the impact of when it came out. It really hit people the
same way as Hendrix's ' Are You Experienced' did back in the 60's.
