| Screaming... Does anyone know how to scream like some bands do? Such as System of down, the lead singers seems to have NO problems going back and forth between singing and screaming...take the song's "suggestions" and "chop suey!" for example...Another song that would be a good example is "is patience still waiting" by the juliana theory
any help would be appreciated!
(btw, i'm not talking about death metal grunting vocals or anything...i cant really explain what i'm asking, but if you listen to the songs listed above i HOPE you'll know what i'm talking to) |

| no matter what screaming will damage your voice, so if you do want to scream then give up singing. In the long run if you don't take care of your voice it wil not sound good later on. Thats why Celine Dion does that crazy tap thing when she speaks to her husband on the phone. A little extreme, but she will be able to sing well untill she dies, unless she gets some disease.
BTW don't you find the Bible refference in Chop Suey interesting? I don't know if is is sacreligious, but it allows you to talk about Jesus.

| actually, i do believe there is a certain way of screaming that doesn't strain your voice...but anyways, that wasn't my question...i was just asking how they get such good quality out of their screaming They also seem to be able to scream at certain notes...so yeah, does anybody have any suggestions how to do it? |

| I hate to tell you but there are really NO ways to scream with out damaging your voice in some way, you just can't use your voice right and scream at the same time...it's not possible. Any voice teacher will tell you the same, like jmlouie said if you're gonna use your voice in that way you might as well give up singing normally b/c you will have no voice left after a while. I love Juliana Theory but they do much more singing than screaming from what I've heard of them and if you MUST scream in your music keep in to a minimum otherwise like we've said you're gonna ruin your singing voice. |

| i should've been more specific...what i meant by "straining" was that he switches back and forth without much trouble...i do know that it will damage your voice...but i'm looking to do a cover of a couple songs, so that's why i was asking |

In fact my vocal coach advises me to use my voice carefully and try not to scream, yell...etc etc. I know many other people in voice lessons that have been advised the same and told the same. Just b/c one vocal coach says it is possible doesn't mean it's true b/c there are MANY who advise against this. But as for CynicalRepose if that is your style of music then be prepared as it has been said to not have a nice singing voice for long eventually your vocal chords will be damaged and your singing won't be the same but if that's what you like to do and that's your style and after hearing the warnings you still think you wanna take that chance, go for it.

| I think the best way to switch back and forth is to practice it. I believe that there are ways to scream without screaming, but then it is not really screaming in the truest sense. If you can scream without hurting your voice tell me, because I'd like to try it.
BTW whispering is just as bad for your voice. So one should not whisper with that airy throat voice, but rather just talk very softly.
Hey... Chop Suey can still be a way to reach non-Christians regardless of the true subject. |
