Wah reccomendations

I have been asked to buy one of these, and frankly, they scare me. I need a very classic wah thats easy to use. True bypass would be nice.

I like the Voxes. Were you looking on the less expensive end, or the more?

open minded. I do not really know the differences. I would prefer one I won't need to upgrade. However, almost 15 years and haven't used one really substantially at all yet...

i recommend a vox. i had a crybaby and it had to high of highs, and too much pinch on the lows. my vox is a good mellow wah. easy on the ears.

Yeah, Crybaby's are definitely the harsher of the two. Vox = Hendrix. Crybaby = Zakk Wylde.

Do you think they're not neccesary?

I could live without mine but I have really started using it a lot when I play, and not always in "Wokka-wokka" mode .

I use mine in at least five different ways:
  1. Typical wokka wokka laden guitar solo
  2. Roll wah back and leave it there for a mellow background sound, good for non intrusive instrumental
  3. Slowly rock wah about two thirds up and back for texture whilst playing on the upper frets with a delay, makes fill notes more interesting
  4. Santana Esque lead tone for latin inspired grooves, kick the wah all the way back, play through a heavy overdrive, bridge PU, Highs rolled off on the guitar a bit too, maybe some delay.
  5. Wokka wokka octave in the tonic of the song over a moving bass line. (Rhythm fill)
I have the cheapest Morley Wah, I forget the model #, but it does all I need.

I agree with the Crybaby models generally being too shrill on the highs. I had the standard one (GCB-95 or whatever it is) for a while and it was just too piercing on the high end, especially when playing with the amp miked at church.

I got a Budda Bud-Wah, MUCH better. Much more mellow without compromising the range of the wah. I'm sure the Dunlops have their place, but for my purposes (playing P&W at church), the Budda was much better suited.

I, personally, like the Crybaby BASS wah on guitar. The pedal is spring loaded, so when you're not pushing it it will go back to bypass.

I play on the worship team and there are some parts that are "supposed" to have wah. I, not owning a wah, cannot play certain parts that are in the arangements that require a wah. Its that simple.

I was under the impression that hendrix played a crybaby for some reason...

Anyway, the vibe I am getting is that the voxes are generally preferred for p & w.

Really there's lots of people using the Vox's and the Dunlops. I have owned two Crybabys (one stock and one with the "vocal mod") and they're alright. I haven't tried any others so I can't really compare them against the competition.

I am willing to bet that for every church guy using a Vox wah there's another one somewhere using a Dunlop. ultimately it's going to boil down to which one sounds better to you.

yeah, so I am trying to gather where to start.

Methinks I will try out a stock crybaby and a stock vox and see which sounds better. The fact that most of my guitars tend toward very bright makes me think the vox will end up suiting better, but its off to a/b them soon.

I was curious as there were morleys and other things muddying the waters.

I've really been thinking about going Morley just to have a wah that's switchless. I think my biggest complaint with the Crybaby/Vox style wah is that you have to sweep through the treble frequencies in order to turn it off, which isn't always the most convenient thing...

of course not being able to using the wah as a filter by rocking it into position and leaving it there has been my reason for holding back on the switchless Morleys.
