The only version I've ever heard is Robin Mark's 8 minute long live version.

We do a similar groove...it's very clap-along friendly...and I do a combo of muted picking and strummed whole-note chords (strum and let it ring for a 4 count) on the verses and then maybe add a little overdrive for the chorus.
As with most songs, musical dynamics is key to the song not being a droning bore but being full of life and energy.

I don't lead in on the song, so I tend to come in on the start of the first verse with ringing downstroked chords using a light OD. On the minors over "and these are the days of great trials" i play arpeggiated chords or just a slow string-to-string strum through.

On the chorus (Behold He comes...etc.) I play with the same light OD but I strum continuously throughout until the return to the second verse. At the second verse I use palm-mutes. I play the second time through the chorus the same as the first.

When it gets to the "no god like Jehovah" part, I usually don't play the first four times through (I think we do it a total of 15 times). repeats 5-8 I do light palm mute. I increase the volume of those on 9-12 and play full out on 12-15, continuing that dynamic through the final chorus.

Days of Elijah is one of my least favorite songs to play...

Thanks for your responses. As Dave said, that song is all about dynamics. It's interesting to see what kind of things Dave and Steve pull out of their bags to make the song come alive.

The skill and sensitivity of the worship leader is also a factor in making the song work. I hate it when the worship leader cuts off early from the "no God like Jehovah" part and I love it when there's a long, gradual build up -- a rhythm guitarist's delight.

Anyway, thanks for the ideas.
