A sweater is a little nicer looking and also has the knitted look to it. Sweatshirts are like a heavier longsleeve t-shirt. A common variety of sweatshirt is the 'hoodie' or 'hooded sweatshirt'.

I prefer sweatshirts that aren't ugly, but sweaters also have their time and place.

I prefer hoodies, but I'd take a sweater over a normal sweatshirt any day..

My hooded sweatshirts are on my comfort clothing list. I love them. However, when you're asking which one's better, I would have to ask, "Better for what?" B/c while I love my sweatshirt, if I wanted to impress the guys, I would't be wearing my sweatshirt. I'd be wearing a sweater.
So, I voted for the sweatshirt, but I'm equally thankful for my sweaters!

Er... it's hot. I prefer neither.

However, in Dortmund, I think I shall make great use of the sweater my girlfriend gave me.
