Peavey Classic 30 combo...plus cab?

Hey everybody,

I've got a Peavey Classic 30 combo amp, and I really like it (I shall love it even more when I get the tubes replaced...). I'm going to be playing in a small concert with my band, and unfortunately I don't think I'll be able to mic my amp. That said, I don't know if my amp is loud enough by itself. Well, it might be loud enough if I cranked it, but then I'd get a lot of overdrive and there are some songs that I don't want overdrive. If I use an expansion cab, will it give me more overall volume (an thus increase my clean channel headroom)? Does anyone have experience using an expansion cab with the Classic 30 combo? Does anybody know what kind of cab is good for that amp? I'm sorry, but I know very little about expansion cabinets.

I own a Delta Blues 210...it's a Peavey Classic 30 with 2 10" speakers and built in tremolo...and I also own a Peavey Classic 115E 15" extension cabinet and have used them together in the past.

There is a formula for calculating overall volume/db when given a certain power output through a specific speaker area but I don't know what that is off hand AND it's only a rough guess at best due to the variances in efficiency of amps and speakers.

That said, adding another cab to the C30 will probably give you what seems like a little boost in overall volume.

Good deal...that's pretty much what I was hoping to hear. I've done a little bit of research on guitar cabs (not too much, though), and I haven't quite figured out the whole resistance thing. Like, I don't know if the Classic 30 combo can ONLY take a 16 olm cab, or if it can ONLY take a 8 olm cab, or it it can take either kind. Also, do the number of speakers in the cab affect the olm rating the combo can use?

The C30 can run an external 16 or 8 ohm cab.
The internal speaker is 16 ohm only.

Yes, additional speakers when wired in series have an impedance equal to the total of all the speakers (8 ohm + 8 ohm in series = 16 ohms) or when wired in parallel have an impedance equal to 1/2 of 1 speaker when speakers of equal impedance are used (8 ohm + 8 ohm in parallel = 4 ohm).
