My congregation has plently of casually attired folks. Some of our Elders wear shorts in the summer, while at least one wears a suit and tie year round.
We do not permit shorts on the platform, but it would be a mistake to judge whether or not you would be welcome in my church - or anyone else who has contributed to this thread - based on this discussion.

Come to my church dressed however you like. You'll find people in the congregation dressed in suits, others in corporate casual dress and yet others in their beach clothes and none of it make any difference to most everyone (I'm sure there's someone somewhere making a comment under their breath...).
The rules on the platform are basically clean, casual dress but no shorts.
I don't agree with the "no shorts" rule but it's a rule none the less and I've no problem leaving it a "non-issue" when there are far more important matters than my personal preference of attire. |

As long as you are wearing at least boxers, I think you would be welcome, and a homeless guy showed up in boxers last week and was treated very kindly.
Just FYI, somebody did give him some pants after the service...

| I think sometimes this issue can be tied to the fact that our lives should be a constant living of worship and not just a Sunday and Wednesday dress-up party to look our best for God. After saying this I must note that one cannot go so far as to cause others to stumble or distract people from the truth and worship of God. I believe that when God sees us on the Earth he passes by all the outer flaws and dress ups and looks straight into our heart were he sees our true heart of worship be it hardened or flowing in praise to Him. Just like BSPE noted in the post above, I don't really think God cares, he sees that homeless man praising Him and rejoices. If you believe that you can praise God without dressing up I would say go right ahead.
Sometimes it may be hard for elders of the church to see why people change because they are no longer of the growing generation and they keep the policies and standards of the church on these issue as they were happening in their time. Dealing with this simply requires time and dedication. If you really believe something should be changed for the good of your church and the pastor agrees with you, just pray about it and leave it up to God to work his will. |

| Our worship leader gave me a call Sunday morning on Canada day and asked if I could dress in Red and White. I was the only one who didn't. When I got to church that morning they all looked like an 80's wedding band. |

I had a really, really hard time finding a new church, and from the sounds of it I would not be comfortable in some of your churches. Nothing against what you are doing at all of course, there are many different things people like about your churches that keep them coming back.
I just couldnt see myself fitting in...

I have no problems with decorum, but I do have a problem with uniforms or any kind of matching outfit.
My personal rule of thumb is that when in doubt, I wear on the platform what I would normally wear to work. In my part of the US, that means a Hawaiian shirt, slacks and shoes. |

| Our church here has a "Welcome Summer" worship service, and everyone (including the congregation as a whole) are invited to dress in shorts, Hawaiian shirts, etc. Even our pastor wears cargo shorts and we toss around beach balls prior to service.
As leaders on the platform, part of the service you perform, IMHO, is to make the rest of the congregation feel comfortable, and allow them to enter into a state of mind conducive to worshipping God. We have an unwritten rule in our church that at least one weekend a month, we dress quite causally, so if there are any guests there, they will not feel over/underdressed. I wear jeans once or twice a month for just that reason.
I understand my fathers generation (traditions, decorum), and respect for God, but our primary commission is to win souls for the Lord, and today, that means reaching those in our communities that are more likely to attend services, where people dress like they dress. As long as we don't stray from Biblical truths, the rest is just style. |

| Our Worship Teams are not supposed to wear jeans or shirts with logos and writing on them, but other than that...it's pretty much open season. I got in trouble a couple years ago at Christmas for wearing a Santa hat while playing bass. Some moron complained that I was worshiping Santa Claus. |
