Korina Wood -- is it really that good?

I have a Korina wood hollowbody. It is real punchy on the tone. Does anyone else have a Korina wood guitar? The original Gibson flying Vs were Korina and they fetch up to $300K USD.

Part of the reason original Flying V's and Explorers cost so much is scarcity. There are 98 total (if shipping numbers are correct) 1958-1959 Flying V's (17 1959s). There are fewer than 100 1958 Explorers.

Korina is a good wood. It's got some unique tonal qualities, but that's not the reason the Vs are so high as mr. Watford said.

Yes, Korina wood (limba) is acutally abundant in africa but it isn't on the market. There are very few uses for it apart from guitars.

Here is a website on some gorgeous korina woods:

Here's a good tone comparison of different body woods:

Here is a fact sheet on Limba with some really nice pics:

My Hamer Newport Korina Pro. I luv this guitar:

in a very few days I will have a chambered Korina body baritone guitar. Dang it, its taking warmoth time to deliver the body.

I think you'll be pleased with it. Korina seems to be exceptionally well suited for chambered body guitars. It has a great punchy tone. It's a little warmer than mohogany and the midrange is excellent.

I notice that my guitar's tone cuts right through the mix, and I have a loud bass player standing next to me.

What kind of pick-ups are you going to use?

Humorous web page.

So how did your Korina get bug infested, or did it come that way from the tree? The worm holes can make it look pretty good (like walnut).

What's your Zach Korina sound like?

Has anyone ever tried this Seymour Duncan combo kit on any of their guitars:

SH-2 (Jeff Beck) on the Bridge
SH-4 (jazz pickup) on the Neck

Here are the sound bytes:

3 Lollar P-90 soapbars, a matched set.

Red face

hmmmmmm, what does she sound like? Geez, that's a tough one!!!
GREAT is a good start, but that doesn't really give Ya anything to go on!!!
She has a DiMarzio Super Distortion in the bridge position, a Fred in the middle slot, and a Virtual P-90 at the neck!!! She has NO finish on her whatsoever, so she's SUPER resonant!!! i guess i'd say she sounds kinda like a Fender Semi-Hollow on Steroids!!! One thing i love about my Zacharys is that even in humbucker mode, they maintain a Fenderish clarity as contrasted w/ most humbucker guitars!!! Where my hardwood Zachs have a very focused clarity to them, the Korina Bugwood has a somewhat diffused clarity and resonance that might be associated w/ a semi-hollow guitar!!! Don't get me wrong, she'll rip Yer face off if i want her too, and i can get her to feedback almost at will, on non-highgain PODxt settings!!! Let's just say that Carlos Santana would probably LOVE her to death!!!
You can see more pix of her and some builder commentary at: www.zacharyguitars.com/220400pics.htm

i hope that helps!!!
