Traynor YCV series.

I am debating if one of these would be better for church than my current rig. I could sell an amp and get one...

Here is the deal. I am not as fond of el84's as I am of 6l6's and 6v6's so the ycv 40 looks appealing. However, the YCV 20's lower wattage rating appeals to me as well. Anyway, I submit this to ye traynor aficionados to instruct me.

What I am looking for is good, light distortion reminiscent of fender. I am not opposed to going fender either, but I NEED 2 channel, and have honestly heard more good about traynor for the price. The footswitchable boost essentially gives 3 channels which is my preferred number.

Bill, I'd take my 40 over the 20 in a heatbeat. I find it has better features and more flexibility with separate channel EQ's. However, I played the newer YCV50 Blue and it is a much better amp than either the 40 or 20. I would have gotten that one, but went with a Rivera Chubster 40 and then, the VS Workhorse Pony, which I just have to rave about. If you can afford about $850, you can have a great amp! I seem to be stuck on 40 (or 30 in the case of the Rivera)! For the money, Traynors are great value. Here's a hint when running the gain channel on the Traynor, keep the gain down, especially when you use the boost function. You'll find it's less noisy that way.

so there is a noise issue on the traynors gain channel? If so... do you know the cause? I have done pretty well in cleaning amps up in the past, but if the drive and distortion has a lot of noise with moderate gain, it would be a real deal killer for me. The Pony doesn't really cut it for me. I would imagine its beyond excellent at what it is. But I want 2 channels of tube drive. A good tube clean is good as a pedal pallet, but I tend to be a guitar to amp guy, and my wife hates pedals too. I would have to sell a couple amps to get the rivera, but thats a possibility too. Theoretically, I could sell some of my current gear and get any amp up to around a grand or so. However, The Traynors can be had fairly inexpensively.

The noise I was talking about is more evident in the boost function in the gain channel only. The clean channel is quiet. Not so in the YCV50 though - it was a quieter amp in all settings. But, having said all that, it could just be my amp or the condition of the power tubes I have in (though they have been changed a while ago). Good tubes may make a difference.

so the ycv 50 is cleaner on the gain. Hmmm, good to know.

Really clean and much cheaper than a Rivera.

I am making the assumption it has a fendery clean and distortion does not go over the top. I am assuming for high gain, another amp would be better.

Well, they are marketed as being a blending a Fender and a Marshall into one amp. This is all pretty subjective, though I'd say they do a pretty good job. But, it would benefit you to hear one yourself with your own guitar. See if you can find a Traynor dealer in your area, then find one on the Internet or used if you like it.

I know I could probably buy this traynor 20. The owner HATES it with a burning passion. Says it is "overly warm" and "sounds like Santana".

haha...funny thing is...we were working on "More Love, More Power" last night and I thought, "neck single, delay, light OD...my tone sounds like Santana..."

that being said..."overly warm" and "sounds like Santana" almost sound like they'd fit the bill for what you're looking in your sound.

You should agree with him heartily and offer to take it off his hands at a price less than what he wants just so you can add it to your collection and make mods. The worst thing you can do is to make it appear that you are very anxious to get it. The art of negotiating...

well, he is a really good friend. If I tell him I like it... I will probably get an offer for a song. I am good at negotiation, but I don't want to rip off a friend.

Yes, we don't want to do that.
