I'm going to be turning 18 this July, which means that I can register to vote. I consider myself a Democrat. The thing is, my parents are both technically Democrats themselves, but have declared themselves independent because they have government jobs. Is it a wise thing to declare myself a Democrat? My career track is to become a lawyer/lobbyist.

Thanks,
Good question. I would like to know what the benefits for declaring a party would be. Just so someone can say they have more members?

The only true benefit I know of is that it gives you the right to vote in the primaries for that party. I believe it is illegal for someone to discriminate based on political party alliance when hiring for a government job (although it happens).

Probably but depending on the job, it is probably better to keep your political opinions to yourself.
