I hate it when people make out the guitar to be some sort of contest. I just play for myself and the church. I am not out to impress people or pick up chicks. But, I guess you can do whatever you want with the instrument.

If you want a nice, quick riff that sounds cool...I picked it up from the guy who sold me my amp...play it with plenty of distortion.

looks cool.

On advantage of having the 7 string is that people are too busy asking me where in the world I got a 7 string to ask about my guitar playing skills.

you clearly have not seen my hands. They are literally the smallest pair I have ever seen on an adult male. Literally roughly 4 inches less finger reach than most guys with small hands. I use proper classical thumb positioning and I cannot reach a 7th string well. An 8 string I cannot reach. for that matter, I cannot play a G chord on a classical guitar well. If I had a ruler I would scan my hand so you could see it to scale and understand.

I'm not sure what the above posts have to do with the topic, but I'll play along.

Yes, in classical guitar, small hands and/or short fingers can definitely be an impediment. I once wanted to learn Christopher Parkening's version of Bach's "Sheep May Safely Graze" -- it sounded easy enough on the recording -- but then I bought his arrangement and woh, I'd need to have my fingers surgically lengthened to play his chord positions.

That's one reason I prefer playing rock. Don't need long fingers to play a power chord.

And if you want to show off (although I have no idea why you would), you could do that just with your left hand and drink a cola or something. Maybe play rock paper scissors or do your hair!

Not really. In rock you can always "cheat." Unlike classical guitar, you don't have to play the music exactly the way it's charted out. For example, if you can't stretch out your pinky enough to play the "Johnny B Goode" riff, there are other ways to achieve the same effect. You can find a different position or even allow your index finger to leave the fretboard for a microsecond while you make the pinky stretch. But the "Johnny B Goode" riff is achievable even for someone with small hands like me.

BTW, once you've got that riff down, you move on to "Every Breath You Take," which has a similar pinky stretch.

Or you could play it with one foot, with the other foot playing the harmony and you could juggle. I was being slightly serious about playing with one hand. Its a bit of a trick but helps your left hand with tapping.
