| I'm here but I'm not?!?! Well, I'm probably one of the only ones on here who's not cookied, but can somebody help me out anyway? I have to type in my name and password anytime I want to be logged in (as opposed to those of you whose computer remembers and logs you in automatically--or whatever happens) anyway, sometimes when I shut my browser window and forget to click "Log off" I come back and am not logged on (my PM screen and user CP aren't up, and the "Log in here" thing is) but at the bottom it says that I am currently online. Why would it do that?

| It could be that it looks at your IP *and* user name. If your IP is here then it knows you are, too. It would only need the user name for those folks who use AOL and other ISPs that use dynamic IP addresses.

| Look around in your CP, there should be an option that says "browse with cookies," click "yes." |

- The database doesn't notice instantly when someone leaves. This is because there is no way for it to know the difference between someone who has gone to another site as opposed to someone who simply is idle (e.g. reading a thread or typing a reply, but not refreshing or going from page to page). Therefore, there is a "timeout" of sorts...if you don't refresh or swtich pages or receive any data from the server for a preset period of time (I think it's about 15 minutes), then it assumes you're gone. If you're still within that time, it assumes you're here and just idle.

- My impression was the cookie option was off on purpose.

| No problem.
I found out last night...it is exactly 15 minutes.
But the boards don't track you by second, so 15 minutes can range from 14:01 to 15:00.

| So Luke, that means that you have seen the many times (minutes) I have been fooling around to come up with the right avatar of my choice? I'm going change this one again - computer related. Guitar related is what I will settle for.

| I don't understand what you're saying.
The way I figured out it was 15 minutes is by going here on Internet Explorer under my s/n and idling and refreshing on Netscape to see how long my name was on the online list.
