Why are analog in's balanced?

On products like the Tascam FW-1804 and the Digi 003 there are "Line inputs", otherwise known as analog inputs 5 though 8. If mic pre's send an unbalanced signal through TS outs then what good are these line inputs other than for direct in keyboards?

I think you have it backwards.

Most mic pres use balanced outs (make sure you use a balanced cable though). Guitars have unbalanced signals and should not be used in a balanced input jack.
