"neither pure communicism nor pure capatalism has ever succeeded at a national level."--Jerry Love

And can we say thank God for both? I don't think anyone would really want to live in either society.

This seems to be more in line with the Theocrats than a pluralistic society where your universal health care could be implemented (vs. "faith-based initiatives" to use a phrase I'm not particularly fond of). In some sense, legislation will always be a reflection of our values (especially if they are values and not facts, preferences and not absolutes).

They did a great job with Hurricane Katrina...of standing by and letting the private sector pull all the weight.

It's considered bad form to resurrect a thread. Start a new one if a thread that interests you has sat fallow

That's simply dishonest. My friend in the ATF was there almost immediately. The police and firefighters were not private. Nor were the national guard members. The Army Corps of Engineers (not private) did leavy reconstruction. Even amongst many of the private sector, and awful lot were government contractors (the company shipping in ice for example).

Hum...I didn't notice the date.

And as far as what I was saying, I was referring to things like this:

http://hsgac.senate.gov/_files/111605JILOpen.pdf

-The roles of Target, Walmart, and Home Depot
-Mississippi Power providing electricity to hundreds of thousands of customers
-Starwoods Hotels provided services immediately after the disaster, up and running within days after the storm
-IBM using its information technologies to help coordinate efforts

Look, I really don't care that much about this. I overstated my point in saying the government wasn't involved. My point-yes-it-was-in-there-somewhere-was that jfahler03's comment wasn't accurate.

I think a revive of a thread only two months old in a less active forum is okay. Mods correct us here?

Yeah, I'm pretty relaxed about that, this forum receives so little traffic. And, a new thread would be a bad idea.
