Song selections.......

Non-Christian songs by non-Christian. Yea or nay? Because a song is "relevant", does that make it OK to use?

That's far too general a question to answer.

Last year on Father's Day, the sermon topic was a tie in between how our heavenly Father cares for us, and how we should use Him as a role model for being Godly fathers to our own children. The Pastor had me open the service with a guitar/vocal solo of the song "Cat's in the Cradle" by Harry Chapin. It was a pefect lead in to his sermon and did not cause any scandals for being a non-Christian song.

If I understand your question correctly, my answer would be that I don't use secular songs during what is supposed to be a worship service.

I keep it......what was the word........."far to general" because I don't want to get into personal issues. Usually if I discuss personal issues I get comments directed at me.

But.......

In the past we've done a movie tune, TV show theme, a song by a known homosexual and we've also done "Cats..Cradle" too.

Amongst others. I just can't remember every one of them.

The buzz word I hear now and then is "relevance". Personally, and I'll leave it at this, I have a problem with it. Not with the styles (though the movie tune was a little silly and we didn't nearly do it as good), but just the fact that we seem to think we have to go outside of Christian authors/songwriters to get music that is "relevant".

I keep wondering if I found "relevance" in a Judas Priest tune if we would play it.

On a humorous note, as I'm sure dozens upon dozens of other praise bands have done for who knows (or cares) how many years, we've done "Amazing Grace" to "House Of The Rising Sun".

If it can tied into what you mean, then yes... you may need to explain the logic, we've used Jack Johnson and Mute Mate. And what they talk about ties into the message or helps point out something in everyday life.

bottom line, the is a time for everything.
