| Hairline fracture... So on March 22nd, I was so happy I got into a particular college that I slammed my hand into a doorknob. The affected area is a place on the back of my index finger between the knuckle and the first joint. For a while it was bruised, and then it developed a bump. From what I can tell the hand is still healing. This bump feels bone like. Is this a problem? |

| a doctor will give you an xray, tell you if it's broken or not, and then put you in a little cast that you're only supposed to wear a few hours a day. There's not much you can do about a broken finger. My advice, go to wal-mart or wherever it is that you buy things and in the pharmacy section you can find the same finger splints that your doc will charge you $50 for. |

| It sounds more to me, totally not a doctor, like it might be a cyst rather than a break. ( http://www.emedicine.com/aaem/topic215.htm, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ganglion_cyst for cysts that can appear on the hand; it says they may be caused by blunt force trauma) It just seems unlikely to me that a break would only now start to show up as a "bump." The only way to know for sure, though, is to see a doctor. Obviously, you ought to do that.

| If you really want to know what's wrong, go to the doctor. However, they probably won't tell you or do anything particularly helpful. I broke my finger last semester. I didn't go to the doctor at first. When I finally decided to go it turned into a huge mess....three doctor visists and a whole lot of insurance confusion later, they told me my finger was broken and they couldn't do anything about it. It was nice to know why my finger was crooked, but beyond that it really didn't do me any good. |

| Broken fingers bruise for extended periods of time. After that, they are sore and very sensitive, but don't develop bumps like you've described unless the fracture has healed after a horrible fashion.
If it were me, I would shrug and say, "Whatever." But then, my feet are in awful shape from doing that with broken toes and whatnot, so don't be like me. If you're worried about it, then go see about getting an x-ray done and go from there.

| Hey there,
I think it's a good idea to go to the doctor. When I read this I chuckled some cause I currently have the same problem as you. I hit my head a couple weeks ago and was in the hospital after. They did a CT and I was ok but I had a black eye for a while. After the bruise vanished I could feel bone as I felt the side of my face. I thought it was just as weird. I havn't gone to the doctor because the tests they did said I was normal but still. Yours might be a completely different thing though I do not know.
Going is a good idea at least you will know why that has happened. : )
