Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

Anyone else blown away by this book? I thought it was incredible, especially the scene toward the end that contains the confrontation between John and Lenina. Absolutely heartbreaking.

I love Brave New World. The first time I read it, I didn't quite get the point that was intended, though granted, I was thirteen at the time. Since then though, I've reread it and begun to like it enough that I based half of my senior research paper this year on it and its author, Aldous Huxley (the other half of the paper was on 2001: A Space Oddysey and its author, Arthur Clarke).

I had to read it two years ago in school, and I love it.
I greatly prefer it to 1984, which it is always compared to.

I taught it to my high-schoolers, and many of them hated it. Why?

I read some of the book in high school, but never finished it. 10 years later, for whatever reason, I bought the book and read the whole thing. From a sociological point of view, I found it to be both facinating as well as disturbing. It certainly is a good read, and I may read it again sometime in the future just to see if I can pick up on anything I missed or come away with any different takes on it.

I don't know if you're being sarcastic or not. They're hooked on media.

I'm going to read this soon. I've found an interview of Huxley talking about what is going on in the world in regards to what I've been saying. I'll post it soon.

Because you taught it to them.
I bet you if they read it outside of school because they chose too, instead of being forced to in school most would have enjoyed it.

From my experience the problem with reading books in school is that you're told how to interpret, what to think, ect. There are so many good books I probably would have enjoyed if I didn't have to read them while the teacher is telling me what pace to read at, how to interpret certain things, ect.

I still want to become an english teacher, though...

Anyways, I've been meaning to read this book for a while. Seems like a good read.
