My cat's about 6 years old now, and when he was a kitten, my parents, being of the "furniture is more important than the well-being of a living creature" mindset, had him declawed (which had a very negative effect on him, but anyways). Recently I noticed what looks like a claw lodged in one of his toe pads. I tried pulling it out, which didn't work, so I trimmed it to reduce the chances of it being caught on something. Since then, it seems to have grown, and seems to be causing him a lot of pain.

Has anyone had this problem before? Is it serious enough to require a vet visit? I've been wanting to take him to the vet but I don't have any money, and the only way I could get there would be to take a bus and try to conceal him in my backpack without hurting him, so I'd like to be sure first. Any advice?
