Collaboration Resource Thread

Considering the recent success of some recording projects, and the wishes of some members, here I present to you a resource for musicians on CGR to collaborate, creating music together on an online forum for creative thought.

So this is how this particular thread will work.

For those of you with access to good recording gear, post the instruments that you can lay down tracks of. So then, if a musician with a song needs a track, they can request it, say, in a thread in the recording forum.

Let's try it, and see what happens.

Instrument(s), Skills:
Electric Guitar (Strat, Les Paul, Jazz Hollowbody)
6-String, 12-String, or Classical Acoustic Guitar
Bass
Various hand percussion (shaker, cowbell, cabasa, maracas, tambourine, pots, pans, etc.)
Harmonica
Electronic sounds... see sample work
Limited with:
Drum Set, not quite pro quality recording for the entire set, but I can do individual pieces pretty well
Piano, again, not quite pro quality recording, but if needed... I have limited availability for a Rhodes.
Banjo, it's a bit crummy, but on an as needed basis as well

Acoustic Guitar
A little bass
Various electronica and synth sounds

I wrote the song on there and recorded the two electric guitar parts, a friend recorded the acoustic... It's a few years old, and quality isn't the best.
http://myspace.com/mgustin
This is just a place to field some experimental type stuff. I have some more complete works on the way that will be posted there soon though.

That's just a quick basic recording, but it's a good recording of some of the tones and different sounds I can do.

Here are a couple of online services for moving large files around:
www.sendthisfile.com
www.dropload.com
WAV files are generally the standard, but mp3s on CGR will usually work for more informal compilations.

I may just try writing a songs specifically to make a collaboration between people listed on this thread, and gauge how well it works.

Great Idea!
Also good info for this thread: T-Boz showed me a couple of online services for moving large files around:
www.sendthisfile.com
www.dropload.com
I think both are free.

The reason it is necessary is that it is much much better to work with .wav files on these types of projects, because everything stays first generation quality, no compression, and the audio is much easier to line up.

If the collab is more for fun, and not serious recording (for eventual CD release), then mp3 will work OK, it's really up to the individuals involved.

I wanted to add:
I have gotten numerous PM's to do projects already from the collabs Ive done and posted here on CGR. I PM'd the artists back and told them I would work with them, it they posted their stuff in this forum. There is interest lurking and others have seen/heard some cool stuff when two christian musicians get together and share music. I want to encourage this on CGR!
Later,

Hmm, I've enjoyed the collaborations I've done. I have a question though. What about those of us without "good recording gear"? I would still love to do stuff, but obviously my quality will be less. Maybe a "lo-fi" next to those of us with limited recording hardware?

I suppose we could just post a disclaimer with those that don't have "good" recording gear. However, odds are you'll be able to get a good enough sound out of whatever you've got.

How about we had a recording setup field, Jon? That was a part of my version of the thread, and I could see it being useful for those who are looking for just songwriting help or for those who are looking for CD quality.

I was thinking about that, but then I also had the thought that the field could get rather convoluted, or something. We could add it...

There are a few things to keep in mind.
1. There needs to be a certain status quo in collaborating. I would say, if you want a drummer to put a track down for ya, then please use a click track when putting down the other instruments. A programmed drum part will work, but something that allows for good meter.
2. Raw tracks are sometimes preferred. What you may have heard, El Cabong, were my attempts to mix the drum tracks, In actuality, I usually send the raw (unmixed) tracks off to be mixed by the artist/producer/originator unless otherwise asked. SSSSOOOOOO, if you have the capabilities to record 16 bit 44.1, and get some decent raw tracks, they can be mixed further or even added effects to.
3. You will have an idea of who you want to work with and who you don't. One thing we all have to be aware of is that some people look for high quality and others are here to have fun and achieve the best results they can. It may be slow at first, but everyone can play a part and develop their own networks of people to work with. The only important thing is that it is an attitude of encourangement and creativity.
My two cents worth.

I suppose everyone kinda has this claim but it's my strongest point:

-Lead guitar...

and I could customise drum loops on request -they're slightly -midi-sounding though.

i wouldnt mind trying an Online Christian band type project(recurring if the first collab goes good etc).
at my Artist Myspace i have a few tracks that were written with vocal space, they include everything from Rhythm guitar, Lead Guitar, Acoustics, and drum programming...basic synth bass kept low to not sound so synthy! i'd love to replace the synth bass with a real bassist, and at least a vocalist.
