HAHAHAHAHAHA!
Seriously though, there are millions of bowls that no one watches, because not only do they not mean anything, but they aren't even good games! A playoff system is the only thing that makes sense.
Oh, and recall the champs of the NBA (the Lakers) would not have been crowned as champions without a playoff system. Bowls are just stupid.

Well, it was obviously Miami who won and I say good for them...

I never said that a playoff would cause more problems than the BCS, I said it would take more away. What I meant by this is that college football is truly a game of tradition more than most any other sport. The bowls are at the center of the tradition in coll. football. If you get rid of these (or even worse substitute the major bowl names for "semifinals" "quarterfinals" and "finals" in a playoff) you've taken away one of the greatest traditions in the sport.

I'm no advocate of the BCS, I think it's a poorly designed system based on $ (just ask guyforgod). Personally I think we should either go back to the way it was or use the BCS rankings like NCAA basketball uses the RPI's and extend the released rankings past the top 15 teams. Use the rankings as a tool in deciding the bowl matchups... not as the final deciding factor itself. Do it in 2002. When the BCS contract expires look at the track record and keep it or dump it.

Oh, and I love the "toilet bowls". Tell me Marshall's comeback in the Mobile Bowl wasn't impressive.

my problems with a playoff system are the following:

1. Location of the playoff games
This poses a problem on several levels. Logic says that the games would be played down south because of the better weather. That is all well and good until you realise how much money it would take for a northern school to do that much traveling. There are also very few teams that have a fan base established well enough to travel to 3 or 4 games more than they already do. They just don't have the money and can't afford to take the time off for a 2-3 day trip every weekend to see their team play. The obvious advantage for the playoff games would go to the southern teams, as it would be less of a drive for their fans so there is a greater liklihood that they would have more support. It would cost the southern teams less money, and don't even try to say that the increased number of fans wouldn't help that team out if it was a close game. All in all, the teams in the northern parts of the nation get the short end of this stick.

2. Decisions about who gets in and who doesn't
Like it or not there is no good way to pick the top 8 or 16 teams in college football for a playoff system without screwing someone over. No matter how fair you try to be, you will always end up leaving someone out in the cold. This is the reason i say it would be no "more fair" than the old system, or the current BCS system. When it comes right down to it, someone is always going to get messed up and screwed over, so playing more games is not the answer.

3. TRADITION
My man Chris already touched on this one, but i must agree with him that the tradition found in the college football bowl system was like before this nasty BCS. Now look at what we had this year: instead of the traditional controversey (all-be-it small) about who would be national champion without a head-to-head matchup, we had a Rose Bowl without the Big Ten conference champ and the Pac Ten conference champ in it and that is just WRONG! In the place of tradition, we had the best team in the nation against the fourth best team in the nation - the second and third place teams both got screwed over, and no one save the Hurricane fans happy about the outcome. The bowl games are now more about money and TV ratings than ever, and there are way too many of them! THis is pitiful and a discrase to the game.

What we need to do is to go back to the old system and do so quickly. The BCS has been a noble little experiment, but it has failed to accomplish anything that it said it would.

Hey, I think Marshall deserved to play in a bowl game (they're ranked, aren't they... it got them that recognition). There are way too many bowls but if a team has a good season they should be rewarded for their efforts. I'll also be the first to say that Hawaii (9-2 regular season) was screwed whereas quite a few teams definitely should have been sitting at home (5-6 North Texas for instance). Then again NCAA b-ball rewards every conference champ (even with a losing record) by giving them an automatic bid to the hoops tourney.
